Iditarod 2008 – The Race Is On!

by Sleddoggin Staff on April 7, 2011

This year’s Iditarod field is the largest the race has ever seen – with 96 teams running in the Last Great Race. Among the competitors are Jeff King, Lance Mackey, Martin Buser, Mitch Seavey, Zack Steer, Kjetil Backen, Paul Gebhardt, Rick Swenson, Hans Gatt, Dee Dee Jonrowe, and many more – making this year’s race full of fast, competitive teams.

Easily the most interesting new feature for this year’s race is the brand new GPS tracking system enabling online Iditarod followers to track their favorite musher. Though the thought of implementing this system for the Iditarod has been tossed up for a few years – it is just now being tested during the 2008 Iditarod. Only 15 of the 96 mushers are carrying the devices this year, plus one trail breaker. The tracking website is updated every 15 minutes – and includes information such as temperature, speed, distance, and altitude.

Stay tuned for more Iditarod updates – and be sure to take a look at the following links for more up to date information on the race. This year’s race is looking up to be a real treat to follow.
