The current economic recession has seen an exponential increase in lost jobs compared to previous recessions. This has left us in a situation where there is one job for every six people looking for employment. Due to the tough competition professionals must do everything to give themselves an advantage.

One way of gaining an advantage over other job seekers is to listen to the experts. Listen to the experts that make a career out of helping others with their career. Many people I have spoken with who are currently looking for employment have never had to before in their life. For this reason they do not know how to conduct a successful job search. It seems simple. Fill out a few applications, go on a few interviews, and get a job. However, this is just not the way it works during an economic recession like the one we are in.

You do not need to spend an exorbitant amount of money to talk to a career counselor and gain insight into how they believe you should move forward. Good career counselors know everything about the employment market. Career specialists can make you aware of trends in your own industry to help you focus your job search. For example, if a particular position is in higher demand than another they will recommend to start applying for the high demand positions within your industry.

Your resume is also going to be a determining factor in your advantage over your competition. Very few people are expert resume writers. Even fewer people are experts at producing resumes that stand out from the crowd. With an average of 100 to over 1000 applicants per position it is necessary for your resume to stand out from the pack so you do not get lost in the shuffle. You do not need to pay an exorbitant amount of money for these services either.

The final aspect of a good job search I’m going to cover and this article is time management. If you are wasting time hopping from employment website to employment website looking for jobs your job search will last far too long. With new developments in job board software, job banks are able to include employment listings from literally hundreds of different websites all on one job search engine. if you utilize these websites you will be hired much faster.
