Canine teams race for charity on Casper Mountain

Dogs were everywhere — which is to be expected at a dog sled race. But the noise of the howling, growling, barking, yelping and whimpering was overwhelming.

Tails wagged and tongues dripped. Some dogs nearly flipped over, straining against the ropes tying them to trailers and trucks. Owners scratched perky ears and whispered soothing words to calm their excited prize-winning pups.

On Beartrap Meadow atop Casper Mountain Saturday, mushers, dogs and winter sports enthusiasts gathered to raise money through Canines for Charity, an annual event hosted and sponsored by Timbermist Tracks Kennels.

Mushers pay entrance fees and friends and family sponsor sled teams. Money raised goes to the Arc of Natrona County, a non-profit organization in Casper that provides services and programs for people with developmental disabilities.

Mushers mingled in the parking lot, munching on doughnuts and cookies.

Abbey Brennick stood next to her family’s dog trailer, awaiting her turn in the six-mile, six-dog race. A thin, tan Husky jumped up, his paws on her shoulders and then around her waist, begging for another chin rub, another chance to lick her face.

Brennick has been racing dog teams since kindergarten.

Abbey’s dad, an experienced musher, helps 15-year-old Brennick and her little brother train the dogs at their Sturgis, S.D. home.

“When there’s no snow, we train with a 4-wheeler, and once we get snow, we train with a sled,” Abbey Brennick explained. “We do a lot of elevation training, up and down hills. We try to train them for the race we’re doing. Usually we run them for about eight miles in the campground behind our house.”

Near the start line, a multi-dog trailer with name tags — Icy, Enya, Tar, Sophie, and Harker — held dogs who weren’t out on the trail. A pure white Husky with blue eyes lounged in the sun.

Sled team trainer Jo Teal stood near the trailer with a 1-year-old puppy, Star, barely containable on a leash. Star seemed ecstatic — the crowd, the sleds, the hot cocoa — on this racing day.

“It’s a good introduction to the crowd and the harness and the excitement,” Teal said. “We start them off at about a mile or two and let them build up muscle strength.”

Some trainers at the kennel take eight or ten dogs out at a time.

Teal said six dogs are enough to deal with. A couple of years ago, she was thrown from her 6-dog sled and knocked unconscious on ice.

“They can dump you just as fast, and then you end up walking the rest of the trail,” Teal said. “The don’t stop. They don’t know ‘whoa.’ They just think it’s ‘go,’ so the only time they’ll stop is if they get tangled up.”

If it were up to them, Teal said, the dogs would run day and night and only stop for food.

“They’re always chompin’ at the bit. They’re always excited. They absolutely love it.”

A team of six dogs lined up on the track behind Teal, jumping and twisting and yelping, tangling with each other and nipping at the handlers who were holding them from taking off before the whistle.

And suddenly, they were gone. The musher had given her dogs a command and the handlers stepped out of the way. Within seconds, the flurry of somersaulting canines turned into a tight team — a machine of muscle, determination, and paw power.

Casper Pictures Now On Flickr!

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 12:41pm
Temperature: 40 degrees F
Conditions: Overcast
Forecast: Sunny today and tomorrow with a chance of showers (huh?). Lows in the 30s.

It snowed yesterday. Yeah. Snow. The white fluffy-looking stuff that falls out of the sky when it’s cold. A nice Spring snow. There was just a dusting on the ground but who cares? It snowed!

April is doing quite well though her neck still looks pretty bad. She’s currently lying on a beadspread stretched in front of the woodstove. We still haven’t been able to get in touch with the owners of the dogs that attacked (and I saw the two dogs again in our backyard yesterday).

But getting to the point that I alluded to in the title of this post. Check out my pictures from the 2008 Casper Mountain Sled Dog Races on http://www.flickr.com/photos/gamusher/2294942160/in/photostream/ . Enjoy!

Today it’s blood

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 9:21pm
Temperature: 49 degrees F
Conditions: Few high clouds
Forecast: Rain tonight, thunderstorms tomorrow. Lows in the 40s

Well, the saga of my inability to stay clean continues. Today I’ve gotten blood on me.

Things started okay today. Had a good scooter run with Calypso. Fed everybody. Gave the cat her antibiotic (she was sneezing last week and we thought she might be catching something).

Then I went to get our 12-year-old, deaf spaniel, April, inside so she could eat breakfast. I let her run loose around our wooded backyard before bringing her in. Make a long story short, two random dogs came into the backyard and tried to kill her.

Not joking.

I heard screaming and ran up the hill to find two dogs holding April down on her back and going for her neck. I yelled bloody murder at them and they got out of our backyard in a hurry. Adrenaline kicked in so things are all sort of jumbled. April got up but she was in total shock and kind of tripped. Brought her inside ASAP and saw blood on her neck but it wasn’t gushing out. I just didn’t know how bad it might be.

Went to the vet immediately. He took off her collar (I think that collar was all that stopped the two dogs from ripping her jugular out) and shaved her neck. There were some nasty puncture wounds and lacerations that required surgery and stitches.

April is back home tonight with a drainage tube in her neck and ugly-looking wounds. I have to keep mopping up the stuff draining out of the tube. Also have to apply hot packs, give her pain meds and antibiotic.

I am pretty sure I know who owns the dogs who attacked April. Unfortunately we have not been able to get in touch with them yet.

More later.

Spring and my inability to stay clean

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 2:35pm
Temperature: 47 degrees
Conditions: Overcast, wet
Forecast: Possible rain showers tonight, partly cloudy tomorrow. Lows in the 40s

I am sorry for dropping off the face of the planet there for a while. So much going on - SWAMPED!

The strange thing about coming back from Wyoming was that I came back to…Spring. I don’t know what exactly is different from when I left Georgia but the minute I stepped out of the Atlanta airport I could tell there was something different in the air (and it wasn’t just that there was more of it than there was in Casper!).

Spring has come to GA. I’ve been running with Calypso (sometimes another local scooterer and her dog gets together with us) and the temps have been cool - sometimes in the 20s or 30s!

But it is quite definitely Spring. Things are starting to bloom now too - daffodils, crocus.

Recently, it has become impossible for me to stay clean. It started in Wyoming. I would get dirty there - quite muddy on warm days. Now, back in GA, I am having the same problem. Mud, wet straw I used to soak up puddles, dog poop, dog vomit (Calypso threw up yesterday but is okay now), grease from helping my dad move junk cars etc. around last weekend. I’m always amazed that my jeans come out of the wash looking…clean.

More coming soon.

Casper Mountain Sled Dog Races 2008

Location: Glenrock, WY
Time - 8:17am
Temperature: 32 degrees F
Conditions: Partly cloudy, windy
Forecast: Rain or snow showers today, partly cloudy tomorrow. Lows in the 20s or 30s

Well I don’t have too much time to blog right now but I’ve got a lot to tell. The past two days I competed in the 4-dog 4-mile class of the Casper Mountain Sled Dog Races. I ran a loop trail with four Seppala Siberian Sleddogs named Misty, Smarty, Boogie and Judy. They were great dogs but they wouldn’t take my commands the first day. They kept wanting to pull into driveways on the righthand side of the trail. And I hadn’t been on a sled in a while and kept tipping over, getting dragged and crashing. Once I slammed into a snowbank and nearly lost my team. Fortunately there was some race help there and it wasn’t a disaster. Then I got sort of lost because the trail wasn’t marked very well. My time on day one was about 46 minutes, which put me in 5th place.

The second day was much better. The dogs knew me better by that point and I knew them better. We really were a team on day two. I drove the sled better and didn’t wipe out a single time! The dogs wanted to go down the same driveways but I told them not to and this time they DID obey my commands! It was great! We were smoking along and passing teams right and left. My time on day two was about 28 minutes which put me in first place.

The combined time of my 5th place finish on day one and my 1st place finish on day two put me in third place overall. So Judy, Boogie, Misty, Smarty and I did well. We won a hand-painted dog bowl and $20. That brings the amount of money I have won in sled dog races up to a whopping grand total of $45! LOL

The trail was nice but tough. A lot of uphills and downhills. There was one really steep hill - all I could think of was roller coaster!!!! The trail climbed pretty high and we could see a sweeping Rocky Mountain panorama! It was beautiful with the clear sky and dry air. Unreal. There was also a very challenging section of trail that was narrow, bumpy and twisty. Strangely enough, that was my favorite part. It was so much FUN!

Running on the high desert

Location: Glenrock, WY
Time - 11:17am
Temperature: 32 degrees F
Conditions: Clear, windy
Forecast: Partly cloudy and windy today and tomorrow. Lows in the 20s.

Well, the last day has been very busy. Most of the snow blew away before the wind died down yesterday afternoon. In the afternoon, Allan hooked 14 Seppala sled dogs to an ATV and went for a great 10-mile run through the desert. The country around here is just so different from what I’m used to in Georgia. Here there are rolling treeless hills and lots of dirt. We saw birds, rabbits, a coyote and pronghorn antelope. The dogs wanted to chase the antelope - it was like 14 Calypsos all hooked up. Was a very good run though.

This morning I’ve spent a good deal of time outside in the dogyard. There is one dog in particular that I like -Timber. He was my lead dog in the Casper races last year.

This year I have entered the 4-dog 4-mile class. That should be fun. We’re supposed to take out another team with the ATV today. So far I’m really enjoying my stay!

Halfway Across The Country

Location: Glenrock, WY
Time - 8:37am
Temperature: 20 degrees F
Conditions: Cold, windy with ground blizzard
Forecast: Wind and snow showers today, windy tomorrow

Woke up yesterday with a tornado watch for North GA. Oh fun…NOT! Seriously, the day I’m supposed to be flying out of Atlanta there is the possibility of tornadic thunder storms. Fortunately things cleared up in time for my 4:30pm flight out of Atlanta. And amazingly (this is the ATL airport remember) we were only delayed a half hour taking off! The flight was okay but a little rough and bumpy.

Made it into Salt Lake City after dark, ate supper in the airport there and then got on a prop jet to Casper. A tiny little plane - I bet if I stretched out I could touch both sides of the thing! It seemed more like a toy than a jet. Prop jets are not designed for human comfort, they are designed to get humans from point A to point B ASAP. They are loud and they vibrate annoyingly. That said, they can be fun and I thouroughly enjoyed my flight into Casper.

There was a couple of inches of snow in this area of WY last night. It’s all blowing away now - winds may gust up to 75mph. It’s high desert here and there are no trees. It’s cold too - this morning before I got up it was 2 degrees!

Anyway, I’m staying with my friends at Deer Creek Sled Dog Kennel. There is a mother dog and her three pups here in the living room right now. The pups were born last week. They are tiny but loud. When the mother dog spilled her water, the pups all started screaming until we mopped it up.

Anyway, we’re supposed to take a team out with the ATV this afternoon so that should be fun although cold.

Calypso is with my parents in GA. I miss her and would have liked to bring her but there’s no way I would/could put her on a plane!

More coming soon.

Winter Morning and more

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 4:26pm
Temperature: 65 degrees F
Conditions: Cloudy, wet
Forecast: Rain showers today and tomorrow. Lows in the 50s

A few days ago we had a beautiful heavy frost (our heaviest this year I think) that was all over the trees as well as the ground. The strangest thing of all was that the woods felt and sounded the way they do after a snow. I wonder if it has to do with ice.

Anyway, things have warmed way up now and I am busy preparing for my next race this weekend. It’s going to be a lot of fun but I’m going to be totally stressed by that point.

Yesterday I went on a run with Calypso and a couple and their husky. They tried out my scooter with their dog and I tried out their bike attachment (called a springer) with Calypso. I prefer the scooter and I think they did too.

More coming soon.
