Just Registered…

Temperature: 72 degrees F
Conditions: Partly cloudy, wet
Forecast: Mostly clear with a chance of storms today, sunny tomorrow. Lows in the 70s, highs in the 90s. Heat index of 103

Well, in case you’re wondering what I’m doing up at such a ridiculous hour, I just registered for the 2009 Beargrease 150 and I hope to goodness I did it right…They asked for random stuff - the usual, like name, address, etc. and then for stuff like boot size. Boot size. Yeah.

So here’s to hoping all is well with my entry and here’s to another 5 hours of sleep before I have to get up and go to the second day of a 2-day conference at the Chattanooga Nature Center (more on this soon).

My First “Real” Mushing Experience: Looking Back

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 6:49pm
Temperature: 89 degrees F
Conditions: Cloudy, hot, humid
Forecast: Chance of thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Highs in the 90s, lows in the 70s

Well, since it is just too darn hot right now, how about some cool pics? I’ve been getting ready for my move to Minnesota next month (wow, is it really that soon?) and I was looking through some of my old pictures from upstate New York in March 2002.

That was when I traveled farther North than I had ever been - to Redfield, NY and the Tug Hill plateau. I had been doing some cart a minor sled work with Aspen back home but I had never really done any “real” mushing until I went to that area of New York between the Adirondacks and Lake Ontario. Here are some pictures from then.

The Tug Hill Plateau gets feet of lake effect snow off Lake Ontario. As an example, the below picture was taken in the exact same location only two days after the above picture was taken.

Me running my 3-dog team around what I called Dead Man’s Curve (actually tame compared to things I have experienced since then).

Running the dogs through the upstate New York wilds was a wonderful experience and I took so much away from it. I knew then that this really WAS what I wanted to do. To be out on the trail with huskies.

More pics (from today’s run) and Calypso’s new collar

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 4:10
Temperature: 80 degrees F
Conditions: Partly cloudy, mildly humid
Forecast: Chance of thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Highs in the upper 80s, lows in the 60s

Just to PROVE the temperature (this is cool for GA in July)

Calypso running up the road, pulling me and the scooter.

The dried-up creek bed.

A sign of Fall? More likely a sign of how dry it’s been up until the past few days.

I got a new collar for Calypso! It’s from Black Ice and is not one of the slip collars so I feel comfortable letting her wear it all the time.

Rain and Run

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 11:00am
Temperature:78 degrees F
Conditions: Clear, wet
Forecast:Partly cloudy today and tomorrow. Highs in the upper 80s, lows in the 60s

So I was able to get out and take a scooter run today for the first time in a while. We’ve had thunderstorms over the past few days and it POURED down rain (although not enough to get the creek running again). Before that it was too darn hot to do anything.

This morning, though, I was able to get out with Calypso and go! Everything was wet and bit muddy but it was 62 degrees which is great for us! I’ve included several pictures from the run in this post.

Buried Treasure

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 9:38am
Temperature: 76 degrees
Conditions: Mostly clear, muggy
Forecast: Mostly sunny today, mostly sunny tomorrow with chance of storms late. Highs in the upper 90s, lows in the 70s. Heat index of up to 105

It looks to be another awful scorcher today. Will be plenty of squirting Calypso with the hose and bringing her inside. This is no weather for a sled dog. I’m so glad we’re heading North soon.

It rained recently. Really rained. It POURED. The result was that there was a lot of mud in the dog pen and it was a big MESS. I am very glad the pen is on a slant because otherwise it would have been like a lake.

Anyway, I was out there in the mud, cleaning up, when I noticed a big hole. The dogs had started it a week or so earlier but the rain and water had really cleared it out. I noticed an odd orange-looking patch peeking out of the ground. I poked it with a stick and it felt like rubber.

I began digging around it and the object started to take shape. Round…orange…

It was a basketball. The thing was nasty and had been buried for a long time. Yuck!

Calypso had no interest whatsoever in the basketball.

April, however, had a great time with it!

So you never know what you’ll find when cleaning up! I’m glad I found this because it could have been dangerous had I not gotten it out.

Stay cool!

NO ESPY BUT MAYBE A LANCE MACKEY MOVIE?

From: http://www.adn.com/sports/story/469110.html

No ESPY for Mackey, but maybe a movie?
ACTION! Warner Brothers, Disney are both interested, musher says.

FAIRBANKS — Usually, the number two is good to champion musher Lance Mackey.

Twice he has won the two biggest races in mushing — back-to-back — the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race and the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

And Mackey hoped that voters might grant him an ESPY award this year, the second time he’s been nominated for the honor.

“It would look great on the trophy shelf, but I’m not counting on it,” Mackey said from Las Vegas, where he was preparing to travel to Los Angeles for the ceremony broadcast Sunday on ESPN.

Mackey, who has won the Yukon Quest for the past four years and won both the Quest and the Iditarod in 2007 and 2008, is one of five nominees for the Best Outdoor Athlete award.

And while lucky numbers usually smile on Mackey, it didn’t happen this time.

Scott Smiley, an Army captain who climbed Mount Rainier after losing his sight in Iraq, was the winner, chosen through online voting at www.espys.tv.

The other finalists were:

• Skeet Reese, 2007 Bass Anglers Sportsmans Society Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year;

• Marathon swimmer Skip Storch;

• Mountain climber Dave Hahn, who has scaled Mount Everest 10 times.

On his second trip to the ESPY awards, Mackey planned to take more time to relax and enjoy the trip, though he called it his “duty” to meet seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.

Many people have compared the two Lances over the years. Both beat cancer and returned to their respective sports to become champions.

“I don’t think there’s much comparison,” Mackey said. “He does all the work, while my team does most of the work in my sport.”

Mackey also will meet what he described as a “well-known” director next week to discuss the possibility of making a movie about his accomplishments.

“Warner Brothers and Disney both are interested in some sort of movie,” he said.

The Fairbanks musher has already begun training for next year’s races, and he believes his team is capable of three-peating back-to-back Yukon Quest and Iditarod titles.

Still, he remained humble about his accomplishments.

“I just want to say thanks to the fans who follow the sport,” Mackey said. “Without them I’d still be sitting in a small town in Alaska instead of being in L.A. with the big dogs.”

Last year, Mackey lost out to Dean Karnazes of San Francisco, who ran 50 marathons — one in every state — in 50 days, including the Mayor’s Marathon course in Anchorage.

not Zoned for a kennel licence on his property. So on July 22, 08 We
have to go in and take his dogs off his property. I have contacted
various Sleddog groups and have had some response. After July 22, We

Sled Dog Blogs I Read

Location: Northwest GA
Time - 9:42pm
Temperature: 78 degrees F
Conditions: Partly cloudy, humid
Forecast: Chance of thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Lows in the 70s, highs in the 90s

Well, there hasn’t been much training going on lately here at Wolf Moon. We’ve had rain though, so that’s good. Calypso dug a big hole behind her house and the house slid into it last night and I had to pull it out this morning. She never uses her house…

I’ve been keeping up with the cyber sled dog world as much as possible and I wanted to share some of my favorite sled dog blogs I visit.

Zoya’s Kennel Journal - the blog of Iditarod musher, Zoya DeNure, of Crazy Dog Kennels. I also read Zoya’s Life With Belly And Baby journal.

Noatak Kennels Sled Dogs and Mushing - the blog of Noatak Racing Kennel, run by Jacques and Magali Philip. This kennel is right next door to Northern Sky Lodge, where I worked last March.

SC Dogsled Team Training Journal - the blog of fellow Southeastern musher, Chapin Burgess. Blog has not been updated recently.

Manitou Crossing Kennel Blog - the blog of Iditarod mushers Jen and Blake Freking and their Jedeye sled dogs.

Husky Homestead - Blog of Iditarod champ, Jeff King’s Husky Homestead kennel.

The Bikejoring Blog - UK blog about bikejoring and related dryland sports.

Lagniappe Kennel — Alaskan Husky Sled Dogs in Chugiak, AK - Blog of a recreational sled dog kennel. Just recently came across this one.

And last, but certainly not least, are the Sleddoggin.com Blogs.

I read other blogs on occasion but the ones I just mentioned are the ones I routinely read!

Enjoy!
