Okay, so I am sitting here in Georgia following the Iditarod and wishing I were back on the runners. When I talked to Jen last, though, she said I’m not missing much back at the kennel as the snow is rotten (what’s left of it). I do miss the dogs though. Oh well, I know I am more needed here right now.

Blake is currently ahead of the Siberian speed record he set in 2008. Woo-hoo! He is currently between Galena and Koyukuk on the Yukon river. I am pretty muchly addicted to the Iditarod’s GPS tracker this year. It’s pretty much Jen’s fault for getting me hooked on it with her “where’s Blake now? Where is he now? How ’bout now?”. Now with no Jen to give me up-to-the-second reports,  I’M doing it too. Agh!

According to said glorious GPS tracker, the leaders in the Iditarod have reached the Bering Sea coast. Lance Mackey has passed Jeff King and is currently in lead. Behind the two rivals are Hugh Neff and Hans Gatt. Oh this is shaping up to be a fun race to follow!

In other news, I have been following the case of Justin Savidis’ dog, Whitey. Whitey apparently got loose from his team and continued down the trail (undoubtedly playing the “come get me” game that huskies tend to play at the most inopportune moments. Unfortunately nobody has since been able to catch him. Savidis scratched from the race and is continuing to search for Whitey, who has been sighted further up the trail. I hadn’t been following Snowhook Kennels up until now but they have a very cool blog - http://snowhookkennel.blogspot.com/ Too bad I came across for the reason I did. Let’s all hope Whitey returns home safe and sound.

Oh, and on a personal note, if any of you want to know more about why I am back in Georgia and what has been going on these past few months in that regard, please email me privately at gamusher @ yahoo.com (with spaces removed, of course. This is not my primary email address but I still check it on occasion. For those of you who already have my primary email, please continue to email me at that address rather than the yahoo address).

On stuffing oneself into a dogbox, “Outside” magazine articles and the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Location: Rome, GA
Time - 2:20pm Eastern Standard Time
Temperature: 57 degrees F (14C)
Conditions: Thunderstorm
Forecast: Thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Some storms could be severe. Highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s

Photo by Lori Hedin. This was the other day in muddy, unseasonably warm Minnesota. We had taken the orphans out for a run and, while unloading them from the dog truck, Lori, Kim and I realized that I might just be able to stuff myself into the bottom box of the dog truck. So I did. So there I am with my head sticking out of the dog box with a hairstyle that…okay, I’m not even going there!

As you will have seen from the beginning of this post, I am once again back in Georgia for a family emergency. I’m not going to go into all of that right now but this has been a hard few months for us. Hopefully, though, this is the last time I will have to be here for this reason. We encountered a hiccup but things are improving again.

Moving along to happier topics - be sure to find a copy of the March 2010 issue of Outside magazine. More specifically, check out the EXCELLENT page 72 article “It’s The Dog In You”, which has a lot of really fascinating information on how sled dogs are able to perform the way they do without burning up like a human would. The magazine also has an article about Eastern coyotes, another subject that has fascinated me. Unfortunately, that article is overly focused on aggression in said Eastern coyotes.

In Iditarod news, Blake is in the middle of the Iditarod and doing well. Unfortunately he has had to drop four dogs but, to the best of my knowlege, not for anything serious. According to the reports (and I have been following the reports online religiously) he will be coming into the Cripple checkpoint anytime now.

Jeff King is currently leading the race, followed by Lance Mackey (are we surprised? Noooooooo!) and they have reached Ruby and the Yukon River.

Again, be sure to visit http://www.iditarod.com/ to follow Blake and the rest of the Iditarod field.

Merry Christmas

Location: Armuchee, GA
Time - 10:34 Eastern Standard Time
Temperature: 32 degrees F (0 C)
Conditions: Mostly cloudy, damp
Forecast: Partly cloudy today, sunny tomorrow. Lows in the upper 20s, highs in the 50s

Hey all!

Above picture is last weekend at MCK. Jen and I took out 8 dogs on the first sled run of the Season. Unfortunately although there had been an inch of snow here and there we were still training on ATVs. Still, Jen and I couldn’t resist. I rode in the sled while we ran down the road and then explored a trail that had been unused for several years. A very narrow trail, did I mention? With trees alongside it right at sled level? And a few branches in the middle of the trail? It was a blast and we were both laughing. The dogs were delighted too - it was all-around contagious enthusiasm.

On the way back, I drove the sled. Jen got off to take the above photo and it was all I could do to keep the team stopped. This is why we weren’t training the bigger teams. Although you can sled, you can’t hook down (with a snowhook to anchor the team).

The team, from front to back, was:

Fiona        Inga
Naoki      Capri
Kenzie       Bluie
Remi     Chester

I am back in Georgia with my parents for Christmas (yes, I know Christma was YESTERDAY) and having a very good visit with them. I miss my dogs though and I understand I have also missed a major blizzard which dumped feet of snow in Minnesota.

My Dad took/staged this picture yesterday. I’m not sure why…but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I’d brought presents from MN so maybe it’s supposed to represent that? Missing from the photo is the plush slingshot chicken that crows when we send it flying down the hall. Yes, we are oh-so mature here.

Above photo is the whole family (dogs included, of course) taken by Bonnie Lundberg at Little Mountain Kennels last May. I love this picture (even though Calypso is trying to drag me into the lake). My parents have been so incredibly supportive of all that I have done. We have faced some unexpected curves this Fall and I am so happy to be spending Christmas with them this year.

The yard in Georgia. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it in Winter.

Anyway, a very merry Christmas to you all!

Racing Notes

Location: Rome, GA
Time - 4:58pm Eastern Standard Time
Temperature: 68 degrees F (20 C)
Conditions: Clear, sunny
Forecast: Clear tonight, sunny tomorrow. Lows in the 40s, highs in the 60s

Hello all. I am temporarily back in Georgia for family issues but things are going well in Minnesota and that is what I am talking about today.

As many of you probably already know, it looks like I am going to be running the 2010 Beargrease Mid-Distance (150) after all. The reason being (again, many of you probably already know this) that Jen is pregnant! We all were sitting on this “secret” for a while before it was “officially released”. It’s making for exciting times at MCK. Jen will not be racing this year but she is certainly going to be busy!

We had a good bit of snow - including one morning when we woke up to about six inches! - but mainly it has just rained…and rained and rained and rained and…rained. All the dogs are doing well in training and the pups are looking good.

Here is an article about the Wolftrack Classic from the Ely Echo, which I just recently happened across.

From: http://www.elyecho.com/main.asp?FromHome=1&TypeID=1&ArticleID=9951&SectionID=4&SubSectionID=4

Wolf Track Classic is primed to grow
10/24/2009 4:37:00 PM
by Tom Coombe

Entering its third year, the Wolf Track Classic is set to grow both in numbers and distance.

The fledgling local sled dog race had a waiting list in 2009, so organizers have opted to expand the 2010 event, set for Mar. 7.

As many as 60 six-dog teams, up from a capped total of 35 this year, and 25 10-dog teams, may take part in the respective races.

“We’re going to be a little bit bigger,” said Joe Russell, president of the Wolf Track Classic’s board of directors.

And a race that involved both the communities of Ely and Tower will now involve a third, as Cook comes on board in an expanded 10-dog race.

While the six-dog racers will continue to compete in a 30-mile sprint between Ely and Tower, the larger race is growing to 130 miles, from Ely to Cook and back with a mandatory eight-hour rest period along the trail.

Started in 2008, the Wolf Track Classic has quickly become a popular late-season stop on the sled dog circuit - and a late-winter boon to the Ely area.

The event has drawn dog teams and handlers from across the region and into Canada, as well as interested spectators from the Iron Range, North Shore, Duluth-Superior area and beyond.

It has also quickly outgrown its humble beginnings.

The move from 35 to 60 six-dog teams was prompted by the long list of mushers waiting for a spot, according to Russell.

“There were a considerable amount (of mushers) on the waiting list and I don’t like to see waiting lists,” said Russell. “So we increased the amount of entries to 60.”

Organizers have also scrapped an eight-dog, 60-mile, Ely-to-Tower-and-back event in favor of a 10-dog race that will go to Cook and spread out over two days.

The event has also outgrown its original starting area at Hidden Valley, and organizers have secure permission from Ely city officials to use Miners Drive instead.

“The new starting chute will be out in front of what is now Irresistible Ink,” said Russell.

The race itself is set for Sunday, Mar. 7, with the six-dog event beginning at 9 a.m. and the 10-dog contest at 3 p.m., but festivities are planned for throughout the weekend.

The day prior to the race, Sat., Mar. 6, is full of mushing activities. The traditional vet check of the dog teams, open to the public, will be held in Ely at a location still to be determined.

That evening, the Wolf Track Classic will hold its Adventurers Gala at the Grand Ely Lodge.

It’s a banquet that will include a lasagna dinner, introduction of the mushers and speeches from returning champions Rebekah Chapman, Matt Rossi, Maggie Heilmann and Clayton Scheider.

Race day includes the 6-dog start in Ely and the finish of the race at Tower, and a 10-dog race that will begin at 3 p.m. Mar. 7 and carry on through the night.

The first musher could arrive back in Ely around 8 a.m. on Mar. 8, but Russell said there will be plenty of action to follow before that.

“It will be an all-nighter,” he said. “It is going to be fun.”

Russell said that strategy will be a factor in the longer race as mushers decide how and when to use their mandatory eight-hours off.

“The first team into Cook may not necessarily be the leader in the race,” said Russell. “They may not have used any rest time. A lot of mushers have indicated to me they may burn right through Tower.”

The rest time must be used before the end of the race and can be done all at once or in increments, at the three checkpoints (Tower on the way down, Cook, and Tower on the way back).

But by the time mushers pull into Ely on Monday, rest time will have been used and a winner will emerge. The festivities will wrap up with a ceremony that afternoon.

The race committee has taken several steps to ensure safety, including the posting of signs along the race trail, which includes the Taconite Snowmobile Trail. The larger race will start late on a Sunday afternoon in order to minimize potential conflicts.

“We’ve had absolutely no incidents,” said Russell. “Snowmobilers have been great about it. They enjoy it as much as anybody else. They’ll pull over and let the dog teams go through.”

Ham radio operators will also be stationed on the trail to report what is transpiring.

Russell heads a board that includes seven members and seven standing committees. The race operates on a $25,000 annual budget, with entry fees and sponsorship money providing the key revenue stream.

It’s an event that will bring hundreds of dogs, and in organizers’ eyes, hopefully hundreds of people to the region.

“Our number one mission and my commitment is to see if we can generate some tourism in the community in a time when there’s not a lot of people in town,” said Russell. “We’re committed to making sure that happens for many years to come.”

More race information can be accessed online on the organization’s website at www.wolftrackclassic.com

I’m A Musher Not A…?

Location: Armuchee, GA
Time - 6:39am Eastern Daylight Time
Temperature: 72 degrees F (22 C)
Conditions: Mostly cloudy, humid
Forecast: Sunny today and tomorrow. Highs in the 90s, lows in the 70s

This Summer has not turned out at all the way I expected. That said, I’m not exactly sure what I expected but it certainly wasn’t this! Not that this has been a bad Summer. Far from it, it has been an excellent Summer!

When I came down from Minnesota in May, I had several main things I planned to do during my time in the South.

Expand the dog pen. I did this, with help from my Dad. I’d come up with some elaborate plans and somehow saw myself working outside for a few hours every day fixing several areas. Yeah, I really did forget how hot it gets here. Still, the pen is now almost three times as big as it was…and took three times as long to build as I thought. However, I am NOT complaining. The expansion is GREAT!

Get a car. Did that too. Finding it took up a good bit of time but was worth it! I love my little red Shuttlecraft.

Type up the novel I wrote longhanded last Summer. Didn’t do that. Nor did I write the sequel I planned. I will at some point but I chose to do some other things.

Print some things offline. I’m still doing that.

Take a roadtrip. Didn’t happen the way I meant for it to but it is happening - we’re combining it with the trip back to Minnesota.

Prepare for college. I got accepted into VCC in Ely. I went to their college prep days before I left. It seemed right at the time. I would start classes at their Fall 2009 semester. Then I started thinking about it more. And then it all started to weigh down on me and didn’t feel like the right thing anymore. So I have pulled out. At the time of this writing I intend to go to vet tech school in Fall 2010. I will probably take a break from full-time sled dog handling at that point and just play with my own dogs. We’ll see what transpires.

Hang out with my friends. DEFINITELY did that! And here lies part of where the Summer turned out differently.

It was what I didn’t plan. And the thoughts came about after hanging out with my friends in situations entirely unlike the quiet of the Minnesota wilderness.

On this blog I write about my mushing life. I write about dogs and sleds and snow and puppies. I don’t usually write about the other side(s) of my life that don’t exactly involve sled dogs. And since sled dogs are so firmly entrenched in who I am, it’s sometimes easy to forget that that isn’t ALL of who I am. Sometimes even I forget.

But then I remember. A friend of mine will bring something up that is so seemingly apart from the mushing life that it’s not even funny. And yet, I will totally relate to it. I am comfortable in two different places, in two different roles. As if I were two completely different people.

And so I have been trying to bring those two facets of myself together. So far it has been a challenge. From reading this blog you might not know that I want to get involved in filmmaking or that I am a YouTube junkie or that I can happily wander around Wal-Mart wearing a metallic silver scarf or that I can quote Monty Python until the cows come home.

So one of the things I have figured out this Summer is that I am a musher and I am also a geek/nerd.

But think, for a moment, about my choice in music. If I were to set my playlist on random it would probably come up something like this:

Moody Blues, Rolling Stones, Enya, Big & Rich, Sixpence None The Richer, Dropkick Murpheys, Star Pilot On Channel K, Weird Al Yankovick, Deep Purple, The Beatles, Pierce Pettis, Dixie Chicks, Nickleback, The Killers, Allison Kraus, The Police, The Cars, Stevie Nicks, Taylor Swift, Cake…

Just to name a few. Completely different music, artists and styles yet I like them all equally. Obviously I don’t feel the same when I listen to Enya as I do when I listen to Dropkick Murpheys. But I am the same person and I love both.

And as my love of music is a broad spectrum, so is my personality. There are some artists I especially love and I tend to listen to their music more and have more of their music in my collection. So are there facets of my personality that I am especially interested in (mushing for instance) and that hold my focus. But that isn’t all of who I am.

I listen to Sixpence None The Richer. And I listen to Nickelback.

I run sled dogs under a starlit night. And I wear silver nail polish and watch sci-fi.

Well, I am FINALLY getting around to posting the pictures of the newly-invented car-top scooter carrier. My Dad came up with this and so far it is working really well! We tried a bike rack on top of Shuttlecraft (that’s my red Subaru, of course) but it was way too short. So this is what we ended up doing.

Changes In The Wolftrack Classic!

Location: Armuchee, GA
Time - 7:44am Eastern Daylight Time
Temperature: 72 degrees F (22 C)
Conditions: Cloudy, damp
Forecast: Thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Lows in the 70s, highs in the 80s

As you probably know, the Wolftrack Classic Sled Dog Races run between Ely and Tower, Minnesota. The races began in 2008 and were run again in 2009. They consisted of a 30-mile, 6-dog race from Ely to Tower and a 60-mile, 8-dog race from Ely to Tower and back. I ran the Wolftrack 60 last year with the MCK puppy team (see picture above, which was taken in the starting chute) and had a blast!

In 2010 things will change for the Wolftrack Classic. I have just seen on their website that the longer race is being extended to a 130-mile, 10-dog race! It will run from Ely to Cook and back, with Tower as a checkpoint. The race is limited to 25 teams so it will be interesting to see how it fills up. I am very excited about it!

The Wolftrack Classic 30 will remain the same, running from Ely to Tower.

Both races start on Sunday, March 7th, 2009. Registration is not open yet.

Red ‘Ru

Location: Armuchee, GA
Time - 5:11pm Eastern Daylight Time
Temperature: 85 degrees F (29C)
Conditions: Partly cloudy
Forecast: Thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s

Well, I finally got around to taking a picture of my new Subaru Outback. I’m quite proud of my little ‘Ru (I’ve started calling it Shuttlecraft. Don’t ask) and am very much enjoying it.

In other news, the dogs are very much enjoying the new lower yard. They are starting to wear little paths through the trees and digging holes and chewing on any underbrush they think looks fun or tasty.

The pack hanging out in the lower yard.
