Wolf wixes in the harness..

by MhadDog on April 4, 2007 - 10:14 pm

I see there are now others with wolf crosses on the board.

Can you who do own them tell me of your experiences on the run.

Did you alter your training method at all..

Any idea of what the % of wolf content might be in your dog?I know this is a tricky question if you don't know the content of mother or father..A guess maybe...

Can't help you there. Two of mine, I can trace their lineage back to Leonard Seppala.

The other, I have no clue. I don't even know what she is mixed with. I am thinking German Shepard husky mix.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, dog harness in one hand, duct tape in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming...“Wow---what a ride”

I have really worked hard to turn my wolf crosses into a strong team.

They are the pack within the pack. They are always the alphas and quite a bit more family oriented.

They are most definetly the ones that set the pack laws and enforce them.

As far as percentages I don't know my Alpha female (my baby) her grand father was a timber wolf her father was a mali Arctic wolf cross.

I have only ever bred her with pure bred sibes and her offspring are amazing.

I call them Snow Valley Huskies. They are by far the smartest and most loyal of all my dogs. They are great off trail backcountry workers. The deeper the snow and the harder the trail the happier they are.

I have to be careful what i say on this one. beforehand, i dont mean to offend or make anyone mad.. just my opinions on the thread.
I haved rescued wolfdogs on and off through the years, but have never met one that i would place as a working dog. My latest were this spring, a bonded pair that was threatened to be poisioned, so i welcomed them into my kennel untill homes could be found. The male was super agressive towards any other dogs and the female was petrified of people. I worked with them, and got the female where she could actually approach people! something you would have guessed impossible the first time i met her. Although i did get them a little more socialized and around other things, I could never get them leash trained. Once i put the leash on, they screamed and rolled and bit the leash ferociously. I felt terrible for them, wondered what kind of life and attention they had before i got them. These guys were VERY strong, but they just didnt have that bond with humans that most working dogs do with their handlers.
I had a low content boy for many years I got from a sanctuary after they shut down. He was the most sweet, loveable boy anyone could ask for. I remember long ago i tryed him out with Stormer (one of my first i bikejorred with) and he didnt budge! LOL I like dogs with drive, and the natural instinct to run and pull. I'm not saying that wolfdogs arent capable of this... oh I have met some very strong, fast wolfdogs but who knows what they would do in harness with a handful of other dogs. I think its wonderful that some people have found them to be good running dogs! i always thought about it but realised that i was already in a breed actually bred for it. There is a wonderful sanctuary a few towns over here that i visited a few times, and met some of the sweetest, loyal dogs, and i wouldnt doubt for a minute a few of those dogs could be running prospects, if adopted out in homes with a high energy lifestyle. I say do what works for you, and you have that bond with your team than Happy Trails to you both!

My Hedlund Gray Huskies have a very low percentage of wolf, a wolf-dog in the fifth generation and two or three wolf-dogs in the seventh. I think that's what Rose Hedlund meant when she talked of breeding "old wolf" into her lines. Both are awesome sled dogs, but that is a very miniscule amount of wolf dna.

I did a trial with a rescued "Malamute / Alaskan husky" that several people with a lot wolf experience claimed was a hybrid. Of course in Alaska such a hybrid is illegal so I'm certain she was a Malusky. < >

She was the like a politicians trophy wife. Beautiful to look at but not worth a *** at performing useful work. Today she is a beloved pet, showing her profile in the front seat of her owner's big-wheel pickup truck. That is a task to which she is well suited.

Personally I'm not real interested in dealing with the behavioral issues common to hybrids. I'll stick to working dogs rather than trying to change a wolf into something it was never meant to be.

LOL a malusky.. my friend has one she calles a Huskamute. Hybrid isnt the correct term anymore, its now wolfdog, since hybrid is a blend of species and wolf and dog are in the same catagory. I think that didnt change but a few years back, so alot of people still call Wolfdogs hybrids. One thing i can say is that there are plenty of hardworking dogs bred for it out there needing homes that would be much better than trying to start a team of wolfdogs. I say if you have a wolfdog, and start out with it that way, then fine.. but i wouldnt go and adopt/buy a wolfdog specifically for running.. just taking an unnessesary risk of them being 'duds'.
