Eggs in Diet?

by Christian on September 18, 2007 - 4:46 am

Does anyone else feed eggs to their dogs other than myself? I find that it is an excellent protein and fat source, in a nice little package. I usually just crack them and put them into their food bucket when I am mixing their food. Anyone feed the eggs whole, becuase I believe you can do this.

I've debated trying feeding eggs. You just crack them over the kibble? Do you use a 1 egg per dog type ratio? I've heard about people giving dogs the whole eggs, shell and all -- but I've always wondered about sharp edges on the egg shells cutting their gums or something when they crunch them open.

I feed egg powder. It's great because a 50 lb bag will last a 12 dog team an entire winter and then some, and it's a great protein source that is convenient and my dogs love.

I just crack one egg per dog per day and mix it into their food bucket. Then I give each dog a portion of the mixed food from the bucket. I put the shells in my compost pile.

I don't know how I feel about giving them a whole egg, even though I know some people do it.

Kristen, do you get your powder from the local feed store?

We get something like 5 dozen eggs for like $3 at Costco. They have a pretty good "bulk" price.

Yeah. It's about $1 a pound here, so you should be able to find it much cheaper.

I would suggest researching raw vs boiled. I think you might find more benefit in boiling them and feeding them shell and all. The shell is packed full of good'ol calcium.

eggs

by kabisiberians on October 1, 2007 - 2:21 pm

I feed hardboiled eggs once a week and in the spring and summer twice a week. Leave shells on. Some will eat the shells and some will actually peel and leave the shell. Helps keep their coats shiny year round. If you don't want to feed eggs there is also a great supplement made by annamaet called impact which is a powder basically made from eggs.
I strong suggest cooking eggs and not feeding raw. Kathy

Thank you for all of the input regarding feeding eggs in a diet. I will research in greater depth, and use your input!

Have an awesome Monday!

Hey does anyone know where I can order powdered eggs? My mom's been asking me to look for some online...for us LOL. She tried powdered eggs and loves it, since we live in an isolated community where some fresh foods are hard to get the powdered eggs are perfect and you don't even have to put them in a refrigerator. We also eat murr eggs, gotta go rock climbing to get those. They're the best eggs I've ever had, get them only in the summer though but we get enough to freeze them so we can have some during the winter. I've read that eggs are good for the dogs so I always wondered if murr eggs are good for them too, I don't know if they're like chicken eggs heh. They're bigger than chicken eggs that's for sure.

This is a very interesting theme for me . During training and long courses, I always boil up about 20 eggs to take along with me. Most of them I feed to the dogs , I eat a couple myself, yummy....... I also mix up raw eggs with water and add to the kibble during our resting season, just to give them a bit of a treat.
