The Big Land Challenge Dog Team Race is held annually at the Terrington Basin in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. In this race the dog runners use the traditional Labrador komatik instead of basket sleds and have between 4-6 dogs per team. The race covers 15-20 km and can take the teams over land and ice. The overall goal of the Big Land Challenge Dog Team Race Committee is to preserve and celebrate an important part of our culture and to recognize the importance and uniqueness of the Labrador Husky. Though we may be a small committee and race, we believe that our purpose is not.
It is important to us that the Labrador Husky and dog teams remain a part of our lives and culture just as they have been in the past, and that they do not become forgotten or fade away. The Labrador Husky is a powerful animal, known for its strength and endurance. It’s similarities to the wolf make it a well recognized animal; with it’s slanted eyes, ability to howl instead of bark, and muscular build to its body. The Labrador Husky was, and still is in some areas, an important part of the way of life for Labradorians. They have been used for transportation and work, and have been a big part of many people’s lives for many years.
Our most recent addition to the Big Land Challenge Dog Team Race in the last couple of years is the Youth Race. We have been trying to work out a shorter race for the younger dog runners to participate in. It is important to us that the next generation of dog runners are able to take part and keep the traditions alive. Each young racer has one or two dogs on their team and also uses the traditional Labrador komatik. This coming race, March 7th 2009, we plan on trying to have the youth race as a headliner for the main race. We also have a day of family activities planned for everyone to participate in and enjoy, as well as local food, drink, and entertainment.
