Law reformation attempt of the Roman tribunes
August 7th, 2008 by alellicoIn 145, another tribune, Gaius Licinius Crassus, attempted unsuccessfully to enact a law removing the right to choose new priests from the priestly colleges and transferring it to citizen assemblies instead. In 139, the tribune Aulus Gabinius enacted the first law requiring secret ballots, rather than having citizens declare their votes in full view of the city’s leaders. Two years later, another tribune’s pro-posal instituted the use of secret ballot for trial verdicts.
