Okay, I am just running the procedure by everyone just in case I missed anything. I would also like to hear your input.
Today I noticed one of the dogs limping out in the dog yard. I checked his foot and he had a big slice on his pad.
So I rinsed it with water, Hydrogen Pyroxide. Then I dried it off, put Emu Oil Wound Spray on it, and put a bootie on his paw.
Did I miss anything? LOL
Also, why do dogs always have to get hurt at the same time! It seems as though all of the dogs always try to get hurt at the same time as the others! LOL
Yep. Also, no running for him for a couple of weeks. :(
That's about what I do, but I always put on gauze for padding. I also use Pink or Neosporin instead of Emu Oil.
Do you put gauze AND booties? I just slapped a fleece bootie on him and it seems to help him out. (since I don't use those fleece ones anymore I figure I should use them for something! LOL)
And I WOULD use Neosporin, but I am going to see how this Emu Oil works out. I am hoping it helps to heal him well. I am a natural kind of person as well (meaning I like to use herbs etc..for healing) so we will see how it works.
Where do you get your Pink Lightning? We can't get it here. I know that it doesn't freeze because of a secret ingredient, so that would be cool to try as well.
Thanks,
Christian
I just use the gauze for extra padding with cordura booties. Fleece probably provides a sufficient amount of padding.
I get Pink from another musher here that mixes up big batches of it.
Cool. :)
I do gauze and bootie too. (Cordura) If you're using a fleece bootie, like Kristen said, fleece should have enough padding.
Well, as of now I am just keeping it clean, etc...I may end up having to cut off a piece of the dead loose skin as well. We will see.
Pads are weird. LOL. It looks like an orange peel where he got cut. He cut the leathery skin above the fat pad on the foot. Interesting how their feet work. I wish my feet had that much padding! : )
His foot is healing really well. I am actually quite surprised at how fast it is healing!
I am VERY pleased with the emu oil wound salve. My dog's foot is almost completely healed in only 2 weeks. And this was an almost 2 inch long slice down the foot! If you have the chance to get the wound salve, GET IT!
The only bad thing now is that I have to now "re train" his foot and toughen up his pad. At least he did it in the summer and not in the middle of training!

I do pretty much the same thing (minus the emu oil, dont have that). And I wash it with some soapy water first, then the plain rinse water. If the cut is large/deep, I'll also put a gauze pad on (securing it with athletic tape) for extra cushion/dirt protection.
