Even though most people on this board live in areas where fleas aren't prevalent, what products do you use to prevent heartworm and fleas/ticks?

For fleas/ticks: Bio-Spot
Heartworm: Ivermectin (cattle and swine) 1/100th of a CC for every lb of dog. Once monthly.

Found any good deals on products? I get all of my flea/tick prevention products from King Wholesale. They are an excellent company, with wholesale prices available to anyone. <!-- m -->http://www.kingwholesale.com<!-- m -->. They aren't an advertiser or anything, they just have great prices, and I love to share all of my great price findings from the net!

Fleas are pretty bad around here during the summer -- we use Frontline on all the dogs for fleas and ticks. Expensive, but our vet gives us a pretty good deal for buying in bulk. For heartworm, we've always used the once monthly tablets. I think they're called Sentinel? I know the folks we got our two most recent dogs from used Ivermectin for heartworm, though.

Yeah, we are lucky, as we don't have that bad of a flea problem. I give it to the dogs all year though, as they come in contact with other dogs from the valley, where fleas are VERY heavy.

Our vet recommends a product called Revolution. It's a once a month treatment that you squeeze out of a tube onto the skin between the shoulderblades.

It treats fleas, heartworm, ear mites, mangemites, roundworms and ticks.

The company's website has a system that you can register for, and they will send you reminders each month so you won't forget to treat your dog!

The price is dose based .. Boro's current dose is the 44-88 lbs, and it cost just under $20.

Wow BoromirsMom! That stuff sounds pretty cool. Does it work well? Right now I'm giving my dog Tri-Heart Plus for the heartworm and Frontline for the ticks and fleas. I also give him cedar bedding in his dog house and it works wonders. No fleas since I started using it. Plus, he won't sleep without it now.Â

Can't say for certain how well it works ... we haven't had a flea problem here for years, and haven't treated regularly for it with our other dogs. :) It's pretty much the only thing our vet recommends though, so I'm guessing THEY think it works well. LOL

Even though I live out in the woods, I havent picked hardley any ticks off mine in their entire lifetime, and never have a problem with fleas. Once in a while i'll see one sit down and dig real good, but they clearly arent infested and i havent seen any fleas on the dogs. I use Ivermectin for HW and i worm extra every 3-4 months with Safeguard. One of my boys has a mysterious Iron defieciency, so he has to take extra iron for that.
