I need help! My Siberian Husky just swallowed a sock. I don't know what to do. I want to wait to call the vet and see if he can pass it naturally. But, I'm not sure. Can someone please help? I'm frantic!!!! :mercy:
Desperate for help,
Caitlyn
By the way, 2 Teaspoons should do the trick...and then I would repeat once more after ten minutes. (if she doesn't throw up)
Also, how long ago did she eat the sock? If it was more then 2 hours ago, you won't be able to induce vomiting, as the sock is probably in the small intestine at that point.
Remember that I am in no way a replacement for a vet, and I would try and get a hold of your vet as soon as possible!
Christian
Thanks Christian. I'm on it. I left an email on the live support page. Don't bother answering it as you already have. I appreciate it so much. Gotta go and take care of the kid.
Hi Christian! :)
IT WORKED! Thank you soooo much for the help. I can't believe it actually worked. My family and I took turns praying and chasing behind him waiting for him to poop or vomit. Thank God (and your advice)! :happydog: Thanks again and may God bless you for your help.
Sincerely,
Caitlyn :)
Oh good; I am really glad it worked out for you and your pup! And prayers do work too! :)
Now just give her lots of loves, and maybe even a bit o' chicken and rice. Just remember that she may be a little bit slow to eat, as her stomach juices were just stripped from her body. So just give her a bit of time, and maybe give her a treat in the morning. Like chicken; that might be nice mixed with some kibble.
And remember loves of hugs! She probably doesn't feel the best after pucking a huge sock! :eyepop:
Well, its things like this that really make me think more about becoming a vet when I am older! I just LOVE being able to help other people with their pets!
(i got your email too) thanks!
Have a good night,
Cheerful Trails,
Christian
I don't have chicken on hand but I can sure dish up some rice as I ALWAYS keep it on hand for his upset tummy. It works wonders. It has him running and grinning :) in no time.
After he vomitted, I put him directly in his kennel(after some hugs and kisses.) He was very exhausted as he has had a terrible day. I took a daring try at giving him a bath on my own for the first time in like a month. Didn't go so well. I finally had to rinse off as much soap as possible and say "there ya go.." ;) I'm taking him this weekend to this self-serve dog wash. It sounds like a car wash.
I wouldn't mind being a vet either. I love to watch James Herriot's show based on his life as a vetenarian. It comes on PBS. Haven't watched it for a while though as I have been busy with my OWN pet. He keeps me on my toes.
You have a good night too. I'm very exhausted and am ready for bedtime.
So how's the pup doing now!?
I split the College Plans conversation to the OFF TOPIC forum.
Wow, Christian! You are truly multi-talented. You are a natural born vet, a musher, and a web site designer. What other talents do you have?
Good luck in college although I'll probably talk with you again between now and two weeks. I just thought I'd tell you anyway. I definitely admire you for your multi-tasking as well. I never was one to do much of that. It takes a lot to keep me focused.
So, how long will you be in Idaho? It's pretty neat that you get to travel like that. I'm not sure if college is for me yet. I always did love learning but the whole classroom thing drives me nuts. I'm a hands-on learner. I learned fine in school but I just prefer to learn by experience.
I have no idea what I'm going to pursue. I want to do something with animals. I hope to eventually be a stay at home mom once I am married. But, I still want to mush. I'll never give up the dogs. I love them too much for that. I'm more into adventure. I want to meet different people, see different places, etc. It's just somthing about that comfort thing again. I'm just too comfortable right now.
So, good luck again...
Classroom settings bother me too. :) That's why I chose to go with the home study route with high school. I mean, I am a social person, love to talk with people, etc...but just hate it when the kids that are messing around and don't want to learn are dragging everyone else down. At least in college it weeds out everyone else who DOESN'T really want to be there. Then you can actually learn and not get distracted by others.
Well, I hope things go well for you as well! Be sure to keep me updated on your career choices too. And I think that's great that you want to be a stay at home Mom; that gets tougher and tougher to do in this day and age! I definitely would like my wife when I am older to have the option to be able to be a stay at home Mom. But that's going to be up to me to be able to provide enough for my family to enable her to do so! :)
My Mom is a stay at home Mom, and she loves it.
Well, let's see; my other hobby is most definitely music. I live to sing and play piano. I love to perform for people at events, singing engagements, etc...
I, too, love to sing. I used to sing in church all the time. I started learning how to play piano and never did really learn. I also have a guitar that I would like to learn to play. What's your favorite genre of music to play and sing? My favorite genres of music to listen to are folk (Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, John Denver, etc.) and the music from the 60's and 70's (The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, etc.) My favorite genres to sing are Celtic and Christian. I will definitley keep you updated. Yeah, my mom wanted to be a stay at home mom but my dad didn't want her to.  :(
I definitely like to listen to every style of music except for heavy metal; it isn't music. LOL
As for performing, I like to sing Josh Groban style songs, or current pop. For piano, same type of thing.
The song I am currently performing/singing at two engagements is "Where are you Christmas," popularized by Faith Hill.
Yeah, heavy metal isn't music in my book, either. I don't care for rap either. I love Josh Groban. He's one of my favorite singers. I was just listening to him yesterday. I like per te, caruso, and oceano. My sister really likes that song by Faith Hill. It's off How The Grinch Stole Christmas too. Right?
Yep, it's from the Grinch!
Oceano is an awesome song of his; he has always been one of my inspirations for singing for quite a while now. He has an AWESOME voice!
Yeah, Josh Groban has an extraordinarily beautiful voice.
Vaseline. If vomiting doesn't/won't occur dose your dog with Vaseline. It can't be overdosed and won't cause diarrhea. It will coat the obstruction and help it through the digestive tract. If worse comes to worse, your vet can still remove the obstruction surgically even though you have used Vaseline....not so with oils (mineral or otherwise).....so never use oils!
We have used this method on quite a few occasions (sometimes days after finding half a slipper in the compound). Even works for ingested spear grass. I lost count of how many camper's dogs that ate there terrible grass and came to us for help. We must have gave out a gallon of Vaseline last summer! Works like a charm and makes for nice shellacked poop! :rolleyes
Every dog owner should keep some handy.

What type of sock? Polyester or Cotton? Cotton will usually digest better then Polyester.
As for the dog, some will just pass it through the digestive system, others will throw it up.
If it were my dog I would give it Hydrogen Pyroxide to get it to throw up the sock. This trick usually works every time.
Give your dog 3% peroxide mixture at 5 ml teaspoon per 10lbs.
You can give the peroxide with milk to help get it down.
This should work for you.
This is just what I would do. Hope this helps! The scary thing is that if it doesn't come up, it could cause a blockage in the digestive track.
Just know that "some" dogs will throw up the sock the next day.
Let me know if you use the peroxide trick!
