I had one of those runs today. Now that I look back on it, it's hilarious, but at the time I was so frustrated, lol.
So, I decided to try running a younger dog (Ginger) in lead. I put her up there with my main leader, Baxter. She did well, but she would try to play with Bax while running, and he just tolerated it. I decided to put Annie (my other main leader) up with Ginger since Ginger knows not to pull that stuff while she's running with Annie.
As I was taking Baxter back to put him in wheel, I see Annie and Ginger start to pass my head. I forgot that Annie likes to turn around in harness when she doesn't have a steady dog next to her :wallbash:. I grab the neckline and start to line them out when Baxter slips his collar and takes off down the trail. I yell at him to come back, and he glanced over his shoulder, gave me a "Why?" expression, and started going off at full speed. Annie and Ginger figure out that he's going, pop the hook, and take off. I grab the sled as it goes by, and somehow manage to jump on without hurting myself.
So we follow Bax for three or four miles, and we eventually get home. He was somehow sitting in exactly the spot where the leaders are during unhooking time, and was sitting there waiting for me to take him out of harness with a smug expression on his face.
Ah, the joys of running dogs.
