What's the weirdest, most strange health related issue you have seen with your own sled dogs - or others you have witnessed? Let us know the side effects, how to treat the issue, tips, etc...
For me I think the most interesting experience I had was seeing another musher's sled dog's tail split open. It had gotten into a fight with another dog - and the other dog's bite split the tail perfectly in half for a 3-4 inch gash. It was just really odd to see how the tail is hollow inside, and is made of cartilage, etc...I mean - I had heard of such thing before, but to actually see it opened up was quite interesting.
How they treated the wound was trim the hair around the cut, sterilize it, and then glue it together with super glue. After which they wrapped it with vet wrap. Now I know there are other ways to treat this type of wound, maybe by leaving it to the open air and the dog's licking - but I think this was a reliable way to fix up the dog in this situation. You just want to be very careful of infection.
