Aisling Sheperd, a ten year old from Norway, Maine - recently became one of the three winners of the 2008 American Girl of the Year "Real Girl" Award. She was able to travel to New York City & meet champion figure skater Emily Hughes, deliver an acceptance speech, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the well-known city.

According to Stephanie Spanos, an American Girl spokesperson - it was Aisling's determination and passion that helped her to stand out against a competitive field of 8,000 entires into the contest.

"Aisling truly exemplifies what it means to be a Real Girl of the Year," stated Spanos. "She is passionate, dedicated and has an award-winning attitude. Aisling's commitment to her dogs and the kennel she founded is tremendous. And, the strength she demonstrates pursuing her dream in dog sledding is a true testament to her amazing spirit."

Aisling is a member of the Down East Sled Dog Club and has been mushing since the age of five. During the 2007-2008 racing season, Aisling placed 3rd in the Musher's Bowl 3 Dog Jr. Class, and also placed very well in numerous other events hosted by the Down East Sled Dog Club.

We would like to thank Aisling for being a Jr. spokesperson for the mushing community - and for helping to bring a positive outlook on sled dog racing.
