A Morning of Snow, Crashes, and a Fast Race - Iditarod 2009

by Christian on April 7, 2011

The morning of Wednesday has brought with it some new stories and interesting developments along the Iditarod trail.

Nancy Yoshida, a rookie Iditarod musher, scratched this morning after crashing in the Happy River Gorge. After reportedly getting stuck in the Gorge around midnight of Tuesday, a rescue was quickly orchestrated in order to get Nancy and her dogs out of the area safely.

Although heavy snows are making for slow trails - the front runners are still setting a quick pace. Aaron Burmeister was the first to reach Takotna and was awarded the prestigious Penair Spirit of Alaska Award. He was soon joined by Hugh Neff, Sebastian Schnuelle, Lance Mackey and Jeff King.

Mushers will begin taking their mandatory 24 layovers anywhere from Takotna to Iditarod, largely dependent upon trail conditions.
