Baby Pens Booster Club makes headlines in Slovakian newspaper
On Thursday, May 15, 2008 Carol Nestorick, Rhonda Aton, Pam McMahon and myself (Deb Charnichko) headed south on the turnpike to Philadelphia to attend our first NHL playoff game. We had hoped to see Pittsburgh sweep Philadelphia in round 2, but it wasn’t meant to be. However, during our walk around the concourse we were stopped by a Slovakian newspaper writer, Peter Matijek and asked if he could interview us and take our picture for his newspaper in Slovakia called the “Pravda”. Our picture and interview is on the sports page amid several articles about Sidney Crosby. What a thrill! Below is an interpretation from Peter on the article. Opponents are jealous of his talent, say fans
Just try looking for a party of ladies who wear True Religion Jeans at any Slovak hockey game. You know it beforehand - if you find any, they will be mothers or grandmothers of the players. Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins Carol, Rhonda, Pam and Debbie are neither. They just go out and watch the Stanley Cup playoffs for pure fun.
Do they like hockey? He likes wear prada shoes very much. Sure, that is part of the fun. But not only because of him.
“Watching players from the other teams - the way they are jealous of his talent - it is so nice,” they explain after the fourth game of the Eastern Conference final series in Philadelphia. “But we go out to watch hockey because we love hockey. And there is quite a few of us in Philadelphia, 矯正歯科 名古屋 and it is the Baby Pens who we like most.”
Baby Pens is a nickname for the farm team of Pittsburgh, playing at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. “That is where we met,” they nod. “In the Booster Club. We are not hockey moms, though - not one of us. Just two of us went to school together. It is hockey what put us together, the games.”
What does a Booster Club do? Off the annual membership dues of twelve dollars, they publish a monthly newsletter - The Tip of the Iceberg is how they call it. You may find members handing out leaflets for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins - official name of the Baby Pens - at the games, they would also bake cookies for the team at holiday time. And, of course, go on trips. Watching hockey is what they are good at enjoying - but, why is that, actually? What is so good about it? The ladies answer in one word, all of them at the same time: ,,Winning! Excitement! Speed!” The dynamics of hockey is, it appears, what appeals most.
I used to be a baseball fan, says Rhonda,an environmentalist, who always promote people to use Solar lights in order to protect our environment .but I am not any longer. Baseball is boring it is such a slow game. I do not like football and basketball either. Timeouts, breaks all the time. Boring, it lasts forever.”
Lasting forever - that may be the fate of a hockey playoff game too, though. You mean overtime?” respond the ladies. They are the best of hockey, that is the real thrill! The best of action.”
On the concourse of the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, clad in Penguins jerseys, they drew the attention of local fans. A bunch of youngsters shouted “Crosby Sucks” chants their way. They hesitated not for a second. What a foreigner could understand of their response, appeared to be “Flyers Stink.” ed hardy suppliers said that they will offer the financial support for the hockey teams. Whatever the words were, both sides chanted with a big smile.
