Understanding Paid URL Inclusion

Posted on January 12th, 2010 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , , , , ,

One way to figure out whether paid URL inclusion is a good deal for your company is to consider some common factors. First, find out if search engines have already indexed your pages. To do this, you may have to enter a number of different keywords, but the quickest way to find out is to enter your URL address in quotes. If your pages appear when you enter the URL address but do not appear when you enter keywords, using paid inclusion will not be beneficial. This is because your pages have already been indexed and ranked by the regular spider.

The most important factor in deciding whether to use paid URL inclusion is to decide if it's a good investment. To figure this out, you have to look at the overall picture: what kind of product or service are you selling and how much traffic are you dependent on to see a profit?

If your company sells an inexpensive product that requires a large volume of traffic to your site, paid inclusion may not be the best investment for you; the biggest search engines do not offer it, and they are the engines that will bring you the majority of hits. On the other hand, if you have a business that offers an expensive service or product and requires a certain quality of traffic to your site, a paid URL inclusion is most likely an excellent investment.

Another factor is whether or not your pages are updated frequently. If the content changes on a daily or weekly basis, paid inclusion will insure that your new pages are indexed often and quickly. The new content is indexed by the paid spider and then appears when new relevant keywords are entered in the search engines. Using paid inclusion in this case will guarantee that your pages are being indexed in a timely manner.

You should also base your decision on whether or not your pages are dynamically generated. These types of pages are often difficult for regular spiders to locate and index. Paying to include the most important pages of a dynamically generated website will insure that the paid spider will index them.

As you can see, there are numerous factors to consider when it comes to paid URL inclusion. It can be a valuable investment depending on your situation. Evaluate your business needs and your website to determine if paid URL inclusion is a wise investment for your business goals.

12 Months Without SEO

Posted on January 8th, 2010 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , , , , ,

A year ago, I started two new web sites without any real thought of SEO. As a writer, I was happy to try to provide what search engines wanted: original content on what people were searching for. While I did provide title and description tags, everything else was just written on a go with the flow basis. The keyword phrase for any page would come out in the natural flow. I could just write to my heart’s content without using any tools checking keyword density.

The first of those new web sites 13 months ago was in the self improvement niche, which is highly competitive. Of course, none of us outside Google knows for sure if there is such a thing as a sandbox, but there is undoubtedly a waiting time before a new site is thrown fully into the ranking melting pot.

In the self improvement case, the last Google update saw my site emerge from the sandbox after about 12 months. So, at last, I was able see whether my no SEO approach was to yield any positive results. Thankfully, a few high rankings were immediately apparent, including a few #1 positions. On one of those terms, Yahoo followed a few weeks later to the #1 position, while the site was #2 (now 1) at MSN.

Now, this is early days for that particular site, and there is much to do to get more high rankings. However, I am confident that SEO is infinitely more simple than some experts, especially those selling ranking tools, tend to have you believe.

Since I started that particular site, I have only made one major change, and that is convert all my web sites to CSS. Providing a content rich site that is easy to crawl for search engine robots is the most important aspect of the new, simplified SEO. In fact, following Google’s advice to webmasters is about all you need to do, and that is free.

Of course, those with software products to peddle will argue that I could do even better with their software. But if Google decides to blacklist that software as a manipulating tool, then all my hard work could be undone. So I will leave the others to chase shadows with ranking software, and just enjoy writing content. After all, that is what basic marketing told me to do.

Search Engine Optimization

Article by John Black

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO as it has become known by, is an essential ingredient for any site to achieve success. However it can be very confusing for website owners particularly for those new to the entire concept of promoting online . There are usually 3 reactions the whole idea of SEO ;

1. Some feel that it is a waste of your time and that only the act of putting an internet site online is enough.

2. Some feel that they can just do it all themselves and that there’s not much to it.

3. Many feel that it is definitely something that should be delegated to a professional and that their precious time is used more sensibly doing things for their companies that they excel at.

All 3 perspectives have merit, for a few companies just having a website is sufficient. The kind of business this would work for is one that isn’t very likely to have people looking for their services online . As an example a personal Chiropractic practice in a fairly small city.

In slightly bigger cities, depending on the amount of competing businesses have internet sites online, it may well be possible to get great results by doing a small amount of promotion yourself.

For the majority , however , getting it to work well actually does need the services of a professional Search Engine Optimization consultant.
Search engine optimisation is a field that’s continually changing and the systems and techniques that need to be used to get good search engine visibility are also an ever changing phenomenon.

the great thing about using Search engine Optimization to get your site to rank well in the search engines is that it is advertising that not only is working for you twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. It is a way of bringing in customers that are actively looking for what you are providing.

Consider the traditional sorts of advertising - newspapers, mags, TV, local papers or radio. They’re all a kind of shotgun approach, sending your marketing far and wide in the hope that your future clients happen to be reading, watching or listening to them at precisely the right time.

Whereas with search engine selling it is easily possible with good SEO services and a well set up site, to put your offering at once in front of the individuals that have purposely looked for your service by typing it into a search engine.

Another great thing about using search engine optimisation to raise your business, is that it is quantifiable. Unlike more normal forms of advertising, it is wholly feasible to track what quantity of people come to your site. Not just that you can tell where in the world they come from, which keyword phrase they once found you, which search engine they came thru and how many came thru each of the keywords.

with additional standard advertising not only is it a shotgun approach, usually it isn’t quantifiable and generally the costs involved are extremely high.

SEO and Website Designers

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , ,

As the internet has become increasingly sophisticated, the various professional fields in the internet marketplace have become more and more specialized. In each area there have been massive leaps in complexity, usability, design and technology.

Even just a few years back, there were relatively few separate specialties for people who work within the arena of the internet. These days there is a vast multitude of ways in which people can specialize online. These professionals include:

Web designers,Information architects,Google Adwords campaign managers, various types of program and software developers and last but not least, Search Engine Optimisation.

In my experience, most web designers these days don’t even know how to include Search engine Optimization in the sites that they design and build. There is ample proof of this; it is visible easily every day by just taking a look at what is out there. Sites that have empty, or in some cases, no Meta tags no headline tags and even in some cases, no title tags at all either! What is frustrating about this is that all of these are extremely easy to include.

So where does that leave the buyer? It leaves them with a website that will no doubt look fantastic; however the chances are that few will ever see it. Let alone become customers of whatever service or product the site is offering. This seems to be particularly true in the case of websites that contain a lot of flash, it looks great, but it is heavy in the browser and as it is purely images, the search engines cannot read it, even if there are words as the words themselves are rendered as images not text.

Therefore, when shopping for a website designer, be aware that though most will have the words ‘SEO’ or ‘Search Engine Optimisation‘ somewhere within their marketing or sales material. Many don’t have any idea what it means, so take the precaution of checking. The way to check it out is to look at sites they have already completed - particularly their own. Check to see if it has Meta tags such as the keyword and description meta tag, check to see if their title tags actually have something useful in them not just ‘welcome to company XYZ website’.

These things are simple for anybody to check out. The title tag contents are readily visible when you open any webpage in your browser, you will see it on the very top of your screen. To check the other parts you will need to look at the source code, you can do this in Firefox by clicking on ‘View’ then on ‘Page Source’. This will show you all the code of the site, the meta tags should be near the top just after the the title tags.

The last thing to check for is to see if the headline is within headline tags. Between these tags you should see the main headline of the page, this should include the keywords that you want people to find your website with.

First Page Ranking Above the Fold

Posted on November 17th, 2009 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , , ,

Here is a case study of the revenue that a client achieved by optimizing a single keyword that moved from the bottom of the second page of Google to a number 4 position, above the fold on the first page.

A client’s website had a ranking of 18 for their primary target keywords on the second page of Google’s natural search engine results. Considering how many marketers are competing for the top positions for this keyword, appearing on the second page of search results seemed a like an accomplishment, but we thought that it could be better.

SEO Works

A marketing strategy focused optimization efforts on improving the natural keyword ranking for this one target keyword. Eventually, the ranking for the keyword first moved to the number 9 position, and then to the number 4 position of the first page search engine results. The improved search engine ranking for this single keyword generated an increase in sales leads far more than expected, which subsequently converted to an increase in sales revenue amounting to over $1,000,000.

Tracking the Moves

The list below shows the search engine ranking relative to the number of sales leads that were generated from the company’s primary target keyword:

  • Nov 08 - position 18 = 6 leads
  • Dec 08 - position 9 = 31 leads
  • Jan 09 - position 9 = 126 leads
  • Feb 09 - position 4 = 102 leads
  • Mar 09 - position 4 = 207 leads
  • Apr 09 - position 4= 221 leads

Summary of Results

The increase in the number of monthly sales leads can be seen as the target keyword ranking moved up over the six month time period. The full benefit of the keyword moving from the 18th to the 9th position is reflected in the January total because the change occurred later in the month of December. The same applies to the move from position 9 to position 4 because the change occurred later in February.

For marketing managers and business owners who are wondering about the difference between having a major keyword listing on the first page of search results compared to the second page of results, this case study should provide some insight based on our experience.

It also shows an example of the potential benefit from having keyword search results listed above the fold of a web page as opposed to below the fold where viewers must scroll down to see more search listings.

There was clear evidence that a higher organic search engine ranking can dramatically affect sales lead generation and company revenue, in this case over ,000,000.

8 Steps to Search Engine Optimize Your Pages

Posted on October 3rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , , , ,

There are a number of steps I always follow when optimizing a site for SEO (note these are just the high points, there are others that I don’t mention here, but these WILL take you a long way):

1) For a new site, I will include the keywords in a non hyphenated domain name (if you can get a .edu or .gov TLD jump on it, otherwise a cheap .info will work just fine)

2) If possible, I will rename the URL to each money page to include the main keyword for that page.

3) Implement Google Analytics for the site and ensure the tracking script is added to every page (if not already done).

4) Go through the “money” pages and make sure that the title, meta descriptions and meta keywords tags are unique and optimized for the keywords on the page. In a competitive niche (over 1 million result pages in Google), I would limit the keywords to one main phrase, a couple of local modifiers and one or two more closely related terms per page.

5) Edit the non-money pages (i.e. pages that are irrelevant from an SEO perspective) and ensure the title and meta description tags are not duplicates of any of the money page tags. Google Webmaster tools will identify this for you once your site has been registered.

6) I also nofollow any links to overhead pages from all of the pages on the site other than the home page. I leave the home page links as follow links, since I want the SEs to index all pages on the site and having privacy, contact, disclaimer, etc overhead pages enhance Google’s view of the “trust” for the site. On all other pages I just want the link to the home page to be a follow link, so I can build up the page rank of the home page. I handle this in Dreamweaver by using two different site templates. If your main keyword page is something other than the home page, modify your approach accordingly.

7) I then optimize each page’s content for it’s main keyword, etc. It’s important that each word or phrase used in the keyword META is found somewhere on the page to avoid keyword spam issues.

8) At this point the on page optimization is complete enough to start with link building. As you may already know, building links is not a piece of cake. I use articles, blog posts, submit forms on relevant sites, reciprocal links, etc. There are ways to short cut this process, without going black or grey hat. A Crash Course In Website SEO

Posted on October 2nd, 2009 in Uncategorized by iptools  Tagged , , , , , ,

When you ask the Average Joe, SE Optimization is something akin to black magic. As a Guaranteed Dallas SEO, I believe part of this misunderstanding is because of all the B.S. spouted out by self described SEO Guru’s. Some do this because they do not know any better while many others do it because their Clients would stop paying them if they knew how easy it was to rank a web site. SEO isn’t brain surgery peeps. It’s a systematic series of procedures that if done properly, will cause a Website to move up in the rankings.

For starters, the person in charge of obtaining the domain should make certain the main keywords are part of the web address if at all possible. With everything being equal, a site with your keywords in the address will rank higher than a website without the keywords included in the domain name.

Next, the keyword or keyword phrase should be used in the Website’s Title. By doing this, you’re helping search engines like Yahoo determine what it is that you Website is all about.

Your keywords should also be used as the Title of each page also, or at the bare minimum, some parts of a keyword phrase should be in the page Title. This also helps the search engines determine what the page is about, what words to rank it for and how relevant it is. As an added benefit, the page Title should also be used in your H1 tag. Search engines rely a great deal on the H1 to tell them what the page is about and how relevant it is. If your web designer does not know how to do this, fire them and find one that understands SEO.

Now that you have your domain, Website Title (Name) and Page Titles optimized with your keywords, it’s critical that the words you wish your website to rank higher for show up a few times in the content of the page. I like to use them at least once in the first paragraph and once or twice more in the article somewhere, especially near the end of the page. A few more times between the first and last paragraph won’t hurt, in summary, just make sure you use them at the first of the article and again at the end.

Finally, you’ll soon discover that the most important part of SEO actually takes place off your Website. In my opinion, the most important thing in getting higher ranks for a Website is backlinks going back to your page on your Website. And it’s not enough to just get backlinks, these links back to your site need to have your keywords as the Anchor text of the links back to your site.

How important are links back to your site? Well, I can rank a website that doesn’t have the keywords in the domain, one that doesn’t have keywords in the Website Title, Page Title and in the Content (although it’s much, much harder to do), but without targeted backward links leading back to your site, {it’s nearly impossible} to rank a site in Google for any search terms that are the least bit in demand.

Search Engine Marketing -Secrets Revealed

Search Engine Optimization Video

Blogging can be a fantastic way to get more traffic charging full speed to your website.

The good news is that setting up a Blog for your website is surprisingly easy but there are a few caveats and things you need to change to ensure your blog is setup correctly to get maximum exposure in the search engines.

Before we start discussing what you should and shouldn’t do with Blogs, let’s take a step back and define what a Blog actually is.

A Blog can be thought of as a simple, public online diary where you can write entries (posts) into the diary.

Being public, the posts can be viewed by anyone who happens to surf by your site, and hopefully you have lots and lots of people reading every post you make, and contributing to your Blog in the form of adding comments, looking at relevant links you add to your blog, watching audio and video, and fingers crossed linking to your blog from their site, if they happen to have one.

What is particularly attractive about Blogs, is that the entire process of Blogging is very simple to do, mainly due to the great quality of Blog software available that you can install on your website.

Decent Blogging software provides all the functionality you need, the management of posts by yourself (and others), the categorization of posts (something that is essential) and even the process of telling other blogging websites every time you make a new post automatically.

Automatically telling other sites about your posts is a huge plus since it’s getting known on the Internet, without the need for you to be having to manually “submit” your blog in order for people to find out about it.

Now in my opinion, one of the most important things to ensure is that you don’t just use the Blog as a sales page (I recommend you leave the selling of your products and services to your actual sales page on your website).

Obviously you will want to talk about your products and services, and the benefits visitors will get in using them, but I believe it’s important not to have an all out sales pitch, as that will tend to turn off visitors who may be seeing your message for the first time. I also recommend you talk about non-business stuff, information about you, the person, some of your interests, things you have found of interest on the Internet, etc.

When considering finding out more about traffic to your website; it pays to visit professionals to help you achieve the best and most rapid results.

When people read these personal posts, they get to know the real you, and form a relationship with a “real person” and not a nameless website, and this can only assist you in future sales with these people.

A Blog also allows (and in fact encourages) participation by visitors, who can post responses to your entries, and this is often a great way to stimulate interesting conversations. Good Blogging software will allow you to remove spam responses (where visitors or programs “write” messages directing people to their site) as well as to moderate conversations that are in appropriate or off-topic.One of the best reasons to use Blogs is to help you rank highly in the search engines. The search engines love Blogs, provided they are providing relevant and quality content.

To give you an idea of how important search engines see Blogs, Google bought one of the largest Blogging sites out there (blogger.com). Having a focused relevant site with interesting and useful content can only help you in your journey to find true search engine love.

If you have read any of the other articles on this website, you’ve probably gathered that I preach relevant useful content. Blogs are no different than other web traffic techniques, you need to ensure it’s relevant, and ensure your separate your posts into logical categories.

For example if you have a website about software development, you may make posts discussing programming generally, other posts about training for software developers, and more posts about a specific computer language like Java.

It’s really important that you don’t just lump all posts together for a few reasons. Firstly, people coming to your Blog may have a specific interest in some of your posts (training for example) and may find it hard and frustrating to easily find all posts you have written on training if you have not clearly defined categories (and allowed posts to be searched/sorted by these categories).

Likewise the search engines may decide your Blog as less relevant if you lump all your posts together than another Blog elsewhere that has posts clearly defined in categories. Search engines very much prefer categorization of information and reward websites that categorize correctly with high er rankings in the search engine.

The most popular open source blogging package is wordpress. Check that out online.

Wordpress is a free blogging package (yes nothing to pay!), and is extremely flexible and easy to use without sacrificing anything in power or flexibility. I use this package and recommend you do as well.

Because of its popularity many Web host’s have it available for installation on their websites for you with “one-click” installs.
