Looking towards the free-run yard from just outside the bunkhouse door

Well, things have cooled down slightly. We saw temps dip into the 30s F the other day, so that was a definite improvement. We’re supposed to see 20s this weekend! That will make for good training. But once again, Wyoming beat out Minnesota! Two states over and to the SOUTHwest from here, Yellowstone park is forecasting temps in the teens and SNOW showers next Wednesday and Thursday! Right then! Tomorrow I’ll jump in shuttlecraft and drive to Yellowstone.

Anyway, getting back to MCK, some of you may wonder what exactly we do with our time here. What is a typical day like for handlers at MCK?

Well, I will tell you!

The bunkhouse

We get up between 5:00am and 5:15am and our goal is to be out in the hookup area by 5:30am in the mornings. A month ago it was pretty light by this point but we are losing that daylight and we are losing it fast. Now it is pitch dark when we go outside.

I usually get up (often with the thought that it can’t be 5 already), throw on my clothes, a hat and a headlamp and then make a run to the outhouse off behind the bunkhouse. I come back and put on my overalls and jacket and Muck boots. Then I grab my gloves and it’s out to the yard. You don’t really need this much gear just working in the yard and it can be downright hot hooking up. However you feel cooler if you go on a run.

Once in the yard, we set up the ATV and lines and then let the dogs out. The dogs run loose in the hookup area and gather under the shed to be harnessed. By headlamp we harness the dogs and then hook them to the gangline. Then either Blake or Jen gets on the ATV and one of the handlers climbs on the back of the ATV and goes on the run too. The handlers open the gate to the hookup area, release the ATV and then the team is out of the yard and off onto the trail.

On cooler mornings we get two teams out. On a really good weekend morning we might run three teams.

While the teams are out, the handlers mix up food for the dogs, fill up a water tub for the dogs when they return from the run and scoop poop.

When a team gets back, we close the gate to the hookup area and unharness the dogs. They run around the hookup area and jump in the water tub to cool off. We then pick up all the used harnesses, dunk them in a different water tank to wash off any dirt or grit (dirt and grit can cause harness rubs), roll up the gangline and then put the ATV back into the shed.

We often let all the dogs out to play at this point and usually try to give all the boys and all the girls a good long time to play in the free-run yard. While this is going on, someone is usually scooping poop.

Later, we hook up all the dogs and feed them. Then we give eyedrops and any other meds a dog might need.

And then, WE have breakfast in the cabin. Usually that is cereal but sometimes we make pancakes or French toast (especially on the weekends). On weekdays, Blake and Jen head off to work (once a week I go into Ely with Jen to shadow at the vet clinic).

There are various ongoing projects that we do during the day. Brushing dogs is one of these. I have spent a couple of mornings this week doing nothing but brush dogs. This is one of my favorite jobs. I also checked for harness rubs the other day.

We usually eat lunch in the cabin sometime after noon. It might be a sandwich or soup. At noon we feed the puppies and moms again. We try to do puppy adventures. Yesterday we had all the puppies out in the puppy play area for over two hours. They learn to sit and they get a LOT of socialization and playtime. Some days we will take them for walks down the trail, other times we will bring them into the cabin or bunkhouse. You can never get bored playing with puppies.

Then there are less-fun jobs like scrubbing food buckets if they are dirty, raking rocks out of the trail and hookup area, hauling dirt to fill in holes, washing food bowls, washing harnesses, fence repairs, ATV repairs (I’m not usually doing much ATV work except when I helped wash them) not to mention household stuff.

We do have time to chill out right now, especially since there are three handlers at MCK this year. Sometimes there is time for an afternoon nap or a hike through the woods. I’ve been trying to read some in the afternoon or catch up on some of my writing projects. And of course I have to go into “town” to do laundry once a week.

In the evening we soup the dogs again, clean the yard again and play with the puppies some more. We cut up frozen meat and leave it overnight in buckets of water so it will be thawed out for morning feed. Blake and Jen usually arrive back from work while chores are in progress.

After all the evening chores are done, we usually all gather in the cabin with our computers and fix supper. House rule says that whoever cooks supper doesn’t have to wash dishes. This is a fun time because we all get to be in one place and talk about the day and anything else we want to discuss. It can get pretty hilarious at times with ongoing discussions and ribbing. If ever anyone takes a shower, this is often when we do so.

After supper, the handlers retire to the bunkhouse. Kim and I have taken to watching a few YouTube videos in the bunkhouse and then quoting them the next day.

Then we set our alarms and read or listen to music or even watch DVDs on our computers. I find this is also a good time to make phone calls…assuming it’s not too late.

And I virtually never have trouble going to sleep.

Happy Fall!

Location: Finland, MN
Time - 9:24pm Central Daylight Time
Temperature - 64 degrees F (18 C)
Conditions: Cloudy, slight drizzle
Forecast: Cloudy tonight, clearing tomorrow. Lows in the 40s, highs in the upper 60s

The above picture (of me with Susan and Calypso in case you can’t tell) is one of the clearest taken with a cheap (like $10) camera I purchased. My logic was something along the lines of: last Winter I had my good camera out in nasty weather and it died and then I had no camera in good weather. Therefore I should get a cheap camera to use in nasty weather and my good camera will still be useable.

I just started experementing with this new cheap camera and, as you can see, the quality is not so great. Maybe I’ll try it on “High Quality” setting next time. Kim took the picture yesterday when we were taking a walk through the woods a little over half a mile from Manitou Crossing Kennels. I had been meaning to go walking in that particular section of woods ever since I arrived LAST year.

Anyway, I have gone entirely off-topic. I didn’t mean to do so - it just happened. I started rambling about the camera and…

Okay, so it’s officially Fall 2009 now. That’s pretty crazy, it seems like. It certainly LOOKS like Fall. Leaves are changing color and falling to the ground. The light is becoming more Fall-like too. But it does not FEEL like Fall (maybe a Georgia Fall but this is Minnesota not Georgia). It’s been warm when we are hooking up in the mornings and I’m wearing a T-shirt most of the time during the day. I’ll put on a windbreaker for the hookup and ATV runs but that comes off pretty quick when the teams get back to the yard. Last Saturday it was 81 degrees F in the afternoon! I saw online the other morning that it was 27 degrees F in Yellowstone National Park. So I think I’ll head out to Wyoming…

Not that I’m having a bad time in Minnesota. Far from it, I’m having a blast. Jen and I both had birthdays about a week apart so we celebrated all week long. We went to a great party near Ely last weekend (thrown by one of Jen’s co-workers from the clinic) with great food, live music and a bonfire. It was entirely too much fun!

Phil, MCK’s Irish handler, is back so the full handler crew (me, Kim and Phil) for the 2009-2010 Season is here. I really like working with both Kim and Phil. They are both great people in their own separate ways. There is a lot of laughter in the cabin when the handler crew are assembled with Blake and Jen (and Karl when he is here) for suppertime. I think there’s also some head-shaking since both Kim and I have a bizarre sense of humor and a knack for finding obscure YouTube videos that we find hysterically funny but everyone else finds weird and annoying. But we all manage to laugh at the whole situation. The dynamics and dialogue here are great!

As always, more to come!

Alice And Orphans

Location: Finland, MN
Time - 8:47am Central Daylight Time
Temperature: 59 degrees F (15 C)
Conditions: Mostly clear, few high clouds
Forecast: Partly cloudy today with highs in the 70s, partly cloudy tomorrow with highs in the 60s. Lows in the 40s

ABOVE: Me playing with Chloe, Saorise and Orla

Here are a couple of stills from video that Jen took of me playing with the orphans. They are so big now but still sweet and (for the most part!) love to cuddle.

This morning we have Ray and Bones (from the Blues Brothers litter) inside while we eat breakfast and they are seeing what they can get into. They are getting a bit vocal and are playing with whatever they can find.

Fall colors are really starting to show now. It’s still warmer than we would like for Fall though. Fortunately we have been able to get teams out and everyone is having a blast!

These stills were taken in the new free-run yard and it kind of gives you an idea of how big it is!

I Should Have Written This Post A Long Time Ago

Location: Finland, MN
Time - 11:09am Central Daylight Time
Temperature: 79 degrees F (26 C)
Conditions: Mostly sunny, warm
Forecast: Mostly sunny today and tomorrow. Lows in the 40s, highs in the 70s

Hagar cools off during a training run a couple of weeks ago

So it is WARM today. Warm for this area of Minnesota at least. And it did get colder at one point. We had “patchy frost” a couple of mornings…although it did warm up considerably during the day time. But not right now. Right now we are just waiting for the temps to drop again.

I have been meaning to write a new blog post for about two weeks and then for about half a million reasons didn’t do it or was interupted…

Calypso and Susan have settled back into Minnesota life. Susie was THRILLED to be back and Calypso is happy too. Both of my girls are out in the big yard now and I’d say they are actually happier out there than they were in their kennel pen here. They get lots of attention and the chance to “free-run” with the other girls in the big acre-plus exercise yard (I can’t say enough good things about this new yard). The other day a noisy little red squirrel started jumping from tree to tree in the exercise yard. Of course, Calypso the red dog (red squirrel? red dog? coincidence?) was delighted to bounce around under the trees barking at it. I thought where else would Kippy have the opportunity and room to really chase squirrels through the forest!

Another handler recently arrived here from Australia! Her name is Kim and she has been doing dryland mushing for a number of years and is here to learn to run on snow! I am really enjoying working with her and we are having a lot of fun! Be sure to check out Kim’s website at http://cdmusher.webs.com/

The puppies are growing amazingly fast and changing every day. We are spending much time working and playing with them. This past weekend we put the orphans (now 5 months old) in harness and went for a 1-mile introductory canicross run. I can’t wait to watch these pups as they continue to grow and learn. After all that we went through last March and April, seeing them becoming sled dogs will be an amazing experience.

BTW, my email is working again and I can now send messages!
