Again Frank Sinatra gives another gorgeous performance (he has always been underrated as an actor in my concept) and he even directed this film! This is an arresting W.W.II film station on an island in the Pacific where limited bands of both American and Japanese forces are stranded. This film examines the human sacrifices made in war and questions if there is justification for those sacrifices examined through the camaraderie and reminisces of fellow combatants on both sides. Sinatra, as director, gives Clint Walker a chance to note his acting abilities in a elegant dramatic performance. The stalwart cast also includes Tatsuya Mihashi, Tommy Sands, Tony Bill, Brad Dexter,Takeshi Kato and Sammy Jackson. Listen for an early pick up detached by John (Johnny) Williams. I always liked this one.

G Smart Mini 3 Digital Camera Review
This Digital Camera is good for taking quick pics and carrying in a shirt pocket. But there’s no flash, and the shutter button takes a little getting used to as it does not “click”. Also, the subject you see thru viewfinder is always “off center”, and there is no viewing of pics thru a rear of camera display, it is text only & tells you pics left to take. No frills, but you get what you pay for, so at $57 with shipping, I give it a generous 3 stars.

A great way to extend the reach of compatible lenses
The 1.4X II teleconverter is a modest update to Canon’s earlier 1.4X TC. The mark II allows this extender to be stacked with another of Canon’s extenders (either another 1.4X II or the 2X II) without having to separate the two with an extension tube (although the loss of sharpness from stacking extenders may not be acceptable to you). Otherwise, the quality of the newer 1.4X II is supposed to be very similar to the older model, which I’ve never owned.

The 1.4X II is a great way to extend the reach of compatible lenses. Note that not every Canon lens is compatible with this extender. The following is from Canon’s Web site: “This tele extender can be used with fixed focal length lenses 135mm and longer (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens), and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 70-200 f/4.0L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lenses.”

I use it frequently with my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, which turns it into a 98-280mm zoom. The extra reach it adds is not tremendous, but it’s very welcome when I just need a little more than what the lens alone can give me.

I’ve found no appreciable loss in sharpness from using the 1.4X. Of course, any extender is going to reduce sharpness to some degree, but with normal examination, I can’t distinguish photos taken with the 70-200mm that use the 1.4X from those that don’t. The fact that the 70-200mm f/2.8L is a very sharp lens to begin with helps in this department.

Using the 1.4X decreases your lens’ widest aperture ‘capability’ by one stop. With some lenses, that can be more significant than it appears on the surface; when using a non-pro Canon body (such as my 20D) the lens must have a minimum wide-open aperture ‘capability’ of f/5.6 for autofocus to work. The lens doesn’t have to be set at f/5.6, it just has to be ‘capable’ of at least f/5.6 after adjusting for the one stop loss from the 1.4X. That means with some camera/lens combinations, adding the 1.4X will force you to focus all of your shots manually. (Note: There is a known ‘fix’ for this that restores autofocus. I’ve never needed to try it, but it involves taping over some connector pins on the 1.4X to fool the camera body. Proceed with caution if you try this, and do a Google search to learn how to do it right before attempting it.)

The 1.4X also reduces focus speed very slightly. I’ve only used it on my 70-200mm IS, which has Canon’s USM and is a fast-focusing lens to begin with, but the decrease in speed is so slight I really don’t notice it. And it does not affect IS (Image Stabilization) at all.

The 1.4X is built to the quality of Canon’s L-series lenses, which means that it is weather sealed and will keep a Canon pro body and L-series lens weather sealed when used with them.

If you’re considering this extender, you’re probably also considering Canon’s 2X II teleconverter. I do not own the 2X but did a lot of research on it before ultimately deciding to go with the 1.4X. The 2X decreases your aperture by two stops, and is reported to have a noticable decrease in sharpness-more than some photographers are willing to live with. On the other hand, I’ve never read a review that complained about the loss of sharpness from the 1.4X.

If you’ve already invested a lot of money in telephoto lenses, the 1.4X II is a relatively inexpensive way to get even more reach (and value) out of your investment while adding only a modest amount of bulk to your camera bag. Highly recommended.

The 1.4x is far superior to the 2.0x
I have both the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters from Canon. Neither, despite what people say, produces an image that just as sharp as the original lens. But images through the 2x are noticably bad from even a casual inspection while images through the 1.4x hold up very well. Carefully controlled test shots are the easiest way to really see the problems in this converter. But for the most part the 1.4x won’t be a liability in sharpness.

The 1.4x loses one stop of light. So while this does work on a 100mm-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS L lens, I wouldn’t reccommend it. Save this for the 200mm f/2.8 L, and the 300mm f/2.8 IS L, and any bigger primes you have.

Nice accessory to get closer
I have used the 1.4x II extender for over a year. It gives me amazing detail with my 70-200L f/4 lens on a 20D. I use it mostly for wildlife and butterflies. Contrast is good with colors that pop. When shooting on a sunny day the shutter speeds are still quick with the f/5.6 and the background is blurred beautifully. In shade areas and low light a tripod is a must! There hasn’t been any sacrifice in subject detail. I can see individual hairs on butterfly bodies even when shooting wide open. This is a great way to get closer without paying a significant amount for a supertelephoto lens.

Magazine Style Wedding Albums

I first saw this version of “Dracula” on PBS wait on in the 70’s (shortly after having read the new) and conception it a wondererful (albeit a tiny stiff) and very faithful film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic gothic recent. Of course there have been hundreds of films featuring Count Dracula down through the ages but very few of them adhered closely to the orignal source material. In fact most of them impartial borrowed a few key characters and maybe a residence thread or two and then objective created their hold chronicle. Thankfully the BBC decided to rectify matters by filming their possess adaptation for television and this is the first film that I am aware of that really does stop proper to the new. In fact this was the first film to point to many of the well-known scenes from the unusual that previous films had ignored. Namely the scenes of Dracula crawling down the castle walls and a very controversial (at the time) scene where the Count offers a baby to his three vampire brides.

Now preserve in mind this is 70’s era BBC televsision. While the acting is quite profitable some of the other production values are not going to be of the same quality that many of today’s viewing audiences are mature to. For example many of the exterior scenes are filmed outdoors while the interior scenes are filmed on sets. Consequently there is going to be some sequences with a definite stagey quality to them. Some of the special effects shots are going to be…well, lets unprejudiced say not all that special. Now having said all that I calm can speak you that there are more chills to be had from this version than the BBC’s most current and very disapointing adaptation of “Dracula”. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that this version is even better than Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”. I never really cared for Coppola’s version anyway but I will give it high marks for production values. One of the tremendous mistakes with Coppola’s film was the changing of Dracula’s character from Stoker’s opinion of snide vampire to that of a comic, romantic love-struck vampire. Louis Jourdan (Gigi, Octopussy) does a comely job as the Count despite the fact that he is one of the few things in the film that doesn’t quite mesh with Stoker’s fresh belief. He does however philosophize very well that exclusive dichotomy of vampires. Namely the sensual yet faulty qualities we’ve reach to examine from many other cover Dracula’s.

To sum up: this film may be cheap in the production values department but if you are looking for a version that is faithful to Stoker’s novel epic, character and concepts then you are on the moral track with this offering from 70’s era BBC. There’s lots of atmosphere and plenty of reliable chills to be had from this version despite the shortcomings it may have.

(With fair the fair air of a European nobleman, polite, curteous but with an arrogant lag) .

This was the first time I’d seen the scrumptious Judy Bowker on TV since Dusky Beauty.

The ever proper Frank Finlay plays a improbable Van Helsing.

(His 1971 Casanova is worth a recognize too.)

And Jack Shepherd really excels as Renfield.

If you have never read the current, then this is the most fair version I have ever seen.

Bram Stokers characters and prose are faithfully transferred to the cramped cover.

Production values are typically BBC slow 70’s videotape, but it’s the sage and acting quality I seize for,

and not a slightly dodgy TV stage site!

Great Scanner
Great large-format scanner. It’s a work horse-not many frills, but very competent. I use it almost exclusively for document scanning (mostly music), and mostly at 600dpi. While I’ve done some photo scans, I’m not competent to judge their quality, other than that I subjectively like them better than my $100 Canon scanner.

I’d love to see someone compare this scanner to the Epson $2500 model, for performance *and* quality. (For my use, performance at 600dpi is more important than the scanner’s absolute best quality at its max optical dpi.)

PROs: Large format; document good scan quality; Much faster than $100 letter-sized scanners; nice lid (easily removable, flexible positioning); reasonable software bundle.

CONs: Big (probably true of all large format scanners); cooling fan is a bit loud, but does turn off after about 5 minutes of non-use.

So far so good…
Nobody else has reviewed this thing yet so I’ll give it a shot.

I picked up this thing because it was the middleground between the iffy to crappy musteks and the uber high end 2 grad scanners. Since I’ve had good experiences with Epson scanners before this seemed like a safe purchase. This is day one of my owning it: After unpacking it, plugging it in and installing the software…I can safely say it works quite well.

Scans go pretty quickly at default settings but get slower the higher your dpi settings (but this is to be expected, especially if you have large documents).

I will do another review later after do some more scans to see how well it holds up.

Early days but to this point the GT-20000 is giving us exactly what we were looking for. This is a ‘mid-range’ price product - not as cheap as the products one might expect to be ‘inexpensive’ with reviews that suggest adequate but not good quality. Nor is the GT-20000 quite as expensive as the professional range models. Installation and start up were simple and quick - we were soon up and running. We wanted a product which would give good quality scans of large format pages for scrapbooking and this does exactly that although some adjustments were necesaary to scan quality and color. Perfect for the price paid.

I purchased this All-in-One color laser printer last night from my local Office Max. I was hoping to see in store how to function of the wireless actually worked. The sales guy was unable to demonstrate this after trying on one or two of the floor computers. As a leap of faith (and a few months of reading on the internet before purchasing), I bought the machine at the sale price plus the 2 year OfficeMax warranty.

I brought it home and unpacked and plugged it into the wall at a location not next to a computer or next to a router or wired network connection. My first idea was to set this up wirelessly so I can leave it a universally accessible location like my family room. Well playing with the 2 inch display and 10 digit keypad was becoming frustrating. The printer found my wireless SSID, I typed in the proper credentials but the wireless functionality never started. I then moved the printer next to the router and a computer which I should mention is a Netgear 802.11g router and an old G4 eMac running OS X.4.

Before I tried accepting this to my network, I decided to give it a static IP address on my router. I typed in the MAC address and the IP address I wanted. Then using the CLX-3175FW’s 2 inch screen and on-board menu, I entered that static IP into the network configuration. I plugged the printer using an ethernet cable into my router and typed the IP address in my Firefox browser on the eMac. It immediately opened the SyncThruWeb page and I was able to configure some settings.

I immediately tried to setup the wireless function. I tried ever possible configuration and disconnection of the ethernet cable possible. I could not get the wireless function started. I plan on calling Samsung when I have an hour to kill. At this point I decided to move onto the next couple tasks, setting up the printer and scanner, and maybe fax.

I downloaded the software from Samsung’s website: 1. Smart Panel 2. Print Driver and 3. Scan manager. I installed the Print driver first, then the scan manager, then the Smart Panel on the eMac. Once I did that, I opened up System Preferences and added the printer to the computer. Once that was done, the Smart Panel icon in the top right was active. I clicked it and was able to access all fucntions of set-up using Samsung Smart Panel. I decided to set-up scanning now.

Within the menu of the Smart Panel, there is an option for Scan Manager. On the eMac, I clicked this and I was able to locate the CLX-3175FW on my network. I set up a folder and two applications. First folder was just generic PDF scanning. My wife likes to scan bills and semi-important mail and documents. The ADF feeder will take 15 pages and scan a multipage PDF file. I then created an application prompt to open up Adobe Acrobat. I often use Acrobat to scan important work documents and need robust functionality to edit and review documents. I then set up a iPhoto application for when want to scan pictures from the flatbed, etc. Time to test.
I grabbed some mail, I had a 5 page wireless bill, and stuffed it into the ADF on-top. The Samsung beeps to let you know you are ready. I select the scan button and scroll right to select “Scan to PC” and click ok. I can see that it found my eMac so I click ok. It then sees the folder I setup called Bills/Mail so I select that. It then asks for color or gray, 300 DPI, etc. I click ok, ok, ok until it finally starts scanning. Immediately on a screen pops up on the eMac showing the progess of the scanned document. The scan finishes in less than a minute and immediately Preview opens up ans shows me my 5 pages scanned document….pretty slick.

I then decide to set up all this on my two laptops. I have a G4 iBook running OS X.4.11 and an Acer Netbook running Windows XP Home. As expected, the scanning function worked exactly the same on the other two computers. I am very happy with the scanning function. It works MUCH better than I could imagine. I use an MFP at work, Ricoh Aficio 161, and the Samsung software is much easier to use and gives better options for scanning to a networked folder. Kudos to Samsung on this one.

I then decided to try fax but I didn’t have much luck here because I have a VOIP system at home. I’ve tried many configurations and even tried calling Comcast for some possible answers but to no avail. Basically I can plug the fax using a standard phone cord into the my Comcast modem, my MTA has two ports. The fax will dial out but it doesn’t complete the fax. An error report will be printed out showing a No Answer error.

Overall, I am pleased. Having a network scanner and printer at home are great. If I can setup the wireless function I would be even happier so I can move this All-in-One unit to a more convenient location. But the network printer works great. The Samsung is set to sleep after 15 minutes and it wakes fast and responds to a network wake. I was able to send mulitple types of documents (PDF, Word, JPEG, internet prints) to the CLX-3175FW without a problem when attached to the network. I don’t have the USB cord plugged in. There is no need. No need to have an active computer, it will run solo. If you want to network scan, you need to have a computer online or setup a drive or folder on your network to act as a server. I plan to setup my NAS (Network Attached Storage drive) which is primarily a backup disc as a server for scanned info but so far its great.

Multifunction Heaven

I haven’t mastered all the functions,thus far, but am very happy with what I have used. It is SO quiet but it truly is LARGE! I am amazed at the quality of the color pictures. My old color laser didn’t produce good color pics. I just hope and pray that it continues on as well as it has been to date.

Toner- issue
I purchased this printer in the UK (since I live there). It is excellent. While in the USA, I purchased black toner cartridges for this printer. Be advised that ONLY toners purchased in the Euro States will work in the Euro (UK)machines. This is due to a security chip in the toner cartridge. Thus USA cartridges will only work in USA machines. Anyone want to buy 2 new (never used) black USA toner Cartridges-good price!
